He died in the early hours of Jan 1 2009 and flown immediately back across the international date line to be buried in the late hours of Dec 31 2008.

Yeah I may do that. I didn't think that this riddle is that hard.
I will post a hint in approximately 16.5 hours from now if I'm around, and if nobody answers it by then also.

I think I got it.
He gets injured in 2009 BC (New Year's Eve parties must have been really violent back then) and dies in the first days of 2008 BC. Makes sense when you look at it as a countdown.
