Time to Read and Score the Stories!
Only three weeks, so get out there and promote the contest and let's get some readers.

Let's get some more readers scoring these stories!
30 ballots cast for 5 stories by 9 readers with 5 to 7 ballots per story.
Tuesday night is a weird time to end the scoring period. So on a whim, and in an effort to get more active readers, I have extended the scoring period to Friday night at midnight GMT (7:00pm EST, 4:00pm PST). So instead of only 1 hour and 15 minutes to read and score these stories, you have 3 days, 1 hour, and 15 minutes.
Only three people have scored all five stories: a tiger, a rat, and a badger. Are you to be outdone by this motley group of mere animals? So contact your friends, tell your family, and finish those stories you've been meaning to read. We don't need a full critique, but the authors would like at least a little feedback.
The stories (in order of ID number):
Harvest Celebrations
Brisbane Snowdancer: and Return of the Lady
Season End
The Iron Badger
Faltered Step
Remember, the theme is The Harvest and there are a few paragraphs on judging criteria on each ballot page.
Thankyouverymuch!

Yes, but do it only once per contest, please.
How do you honestly feel your story stacks up against the others for Theme, Creativity, Enjoyability, and Technical?
You can also invite your friends to read and score the stories too, although it's probably a bit late this contest. In the past when I invited people I knew, I was careful to ask them to read and score as many stories as possible, rather than asking them to "vote for me". Last season it was apparent one participant invited a few people because this person got more ballots and got several exclusive ballots. They didn't win, but they did get more ballots.
What is not cool is ballot stuffing and I have a few checks in place to help detect that.
If I can get my head out of the tech and into promoting the site, we can get more readers and authors. The more readers and the more ballots, the more accurate the results.

I remember at least one season I scored all stories including my own. But I stepped back and scored as an impartial, not all can do that but I always look at all stories as just a story nothing about who they are conected to. I don't remember the exact scores I gave myself but I do remember it was in the 3's and 4's area mostly. I didn't think about this is my story lets bump my scores up I thought this is another entry to the contest, how do I honestly feel they did on all the areas. _________________ http://www.bukisa.com/people/AmberBarnes check it out!

One cannot be impatial or objective about one's own work. Proven fact so I don't try.
Anyway, my problem is that most of the people I know who aren't around here anyway and thus know about this don't speak or read English too well, so that's out. I've tried to get my parents to read my stuff for some feedback but gave up long ago. _________________ Tygon Panthera - name and species

I can be impartial, like I said most can't, very few can. I can honestly look at any type of work and think nothing about the creator and only about the actual quality of the work. _________________ http://www.bukisa.com/people/AmberBarnes check it out!

My apologies for the delay. It is badger season, which requires a thousand little acts of devotion, such as office parties, trips to the mall and the grocery store, and the personal attention--and Mrs. Badger will not be denied. So my time has been fragmented. Then I made all the bar graphs backwards and they wanted redoing. I'm supposed to be headed up to our mountain den, but her back is turned so you get this message today instead of Monday.
The Results
The Iron Badger, by Dr. Kayngi came in first place with an overall score of 3.97.
Brisbane Snowdancer: and Return of the Lady, by A. Sigurd Olson came in second with an overall score of 3.88.
Season End, by Charles Henry came in third with an overall score of 3.75.
Faltered Step, by Dr. Kayngi had an overall score of 3.29.
Harvest Celebrations, by Tygon Panthera had an overall score of 3.08.
Congratulations to Dr. Kayngi and to all the authors for a job well done. Dr., I'll get your trophy out to you this week.

What fears? You're, on average, less than a single point from the top. I'm surprised that it was all so close.
Also, Dr K. may have won, but there's .21 points seperating your story from her second entry. Her second entry was .46 away from the next one up. _________________ Nadan

The fear that I was too far away from the what most people considet a proper harvest theme.
Also I realized that I was far too generous when giving out points... I guess I have to be meaner or something. _________________ Tygon Panthera - name and species

Tygon, you got a 3.67 for theme, which isn't bad for a daring move like, "Aliens sow strange seed on a planet, then harvest all life leaving it a barren rock."
When I started reading your story and you mentioned the harvest celebration that would not be happening, I thought, "That's a lame use of the theme." But then I got to the last two paragraphs (which should have been set off by a scene break, IMO) and I realized the brilliance of what you'd done. If you remove "harvest" from the story (see my one-sentence synopsis, above) the story falls apart. To me that screams, "Five!"
Other people gave you threes and fours, so they either thought your use of the theme was okay, or it was better than average.
Scotty
FYI: I do not look at any of the others' scores before I enter my ballots, so I did not give you a five to compensate for the threes--I thought your use of the theme merited a five. _________________

I thought the story was quite original, yet strangely depressing. But, what do I know? _________________ <This space reserved for some random nonsense.> |
