American
Crisps
1
cup granulated white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup vegetable oil (Canola is good, as is Crisco)
1 cup shortening (NOT lard! Again,
Crisco is good)
1 egg beaten
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3½ cups flour
2 Tablespoons sour cream
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Mix these ingredients together with a mixer set on low, and add
1 cup crisped rice cereal
1 cup rolled oats
Mix in thoroughly with a large ladle.
Drop by teaspoons onto lightly greased cookie sheets (you may use sheets
lined with parchment paper instead if so desired).
Criss-cross the tops with a fork dipped in flour.
Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.
Different ovens mean different things when they are set to a particular temperature. Always use the lower time of 8 minutes for the first batch, to be sure not to burn them. They are still pretty good if underdone, but burnt ones are really yucky and need to be pitched.
