Hmmm. I haven't the foggiest idea of the nature of size when it comes to the length of stories. I am pretty confident that they are in this order:
Short Story - The shortest
Novella - The next shortest
Novel - Next one
Epic - Next!
Series, Trilogy, Legacy, etc - The longest, usually in separate bindings.
Is this true, first of all?
Is there a standard to the sizes of stories? |

I've heard of the following guidelines being used by some publishers:
Short story - up to 7500 words
Novelette - 7500-17500 words
Novella - 17500-40000 words
Novel - 40000 or more words
I would consider a novel that is under about 80000 words would be a short novel, and one over 200000 words might be called an epic novel. Many publishers consider 80000-120000 to be the preferred length for new authors, though established authors often produce much longer works.
A typical mass-market paperback book averages about 325 words per page, though that figure can vary from under 250 up to about 400 depending on how it is typeset. Note that manuscript pages have about 250 words per page (this is the typed, double-spaced format used by authors to submit their works to publishers). _________________ mwalimu
