FANG Volume 1G is now available for $19.99!

If you haven't heard about FANG, the Little Black Book of Furry Fiction, you've either been living under a rock or you've had much better things to do than keep tabs on the state of furry fiction. The short story is that Alex "[[email protected]]Osfer[/url]" Vance decided that there weren't enough printed outlets for furry fiction, compared to the dozens of picture and comic publications, and that something had to be done.

On June 15th, he announced a new website, www.osfer.com, and that a new publication called FANG would be accepting submissions for male/male erotica, a genre with which he was quite familiar and in which he'd met a number of very talented author as aresult of the popularity of his Maranatha stories.Submissions were screen first on writing technique and skill -- from such trivial things as the ability to spell and the appropriate use of punctuation to the realism of their dialogue and the emotional resonance of the story.

A generous helping of submissions streamed in over the following month, during which www.osfer.com received an upgrade (dropdown menus! forum! gallery!), and after dozens of hours of careful reading and reviewing the Edito managed to whittle down the thousand-plus pages of gay erotica to a more manageable three hundred. Adding editorial copy and a few articles by other authors, this swelled to 356 pages.

For comparison: the latest Harry Potter book, purportedly some six hundred pages, has such large margins, such long line spacing and such large fonts, that if it were made formatted the same way that FANG is, it would shrink to a mere two hundred and fifty pages. And FANG has more.

What are those pages filled with? Stories. This time, in the genre of male/male erotica, though future issues will have different themes, ranging from sci-fi to horror to crime to children's fiction. There really aren't any limits, as long as there's quality furry writers out there plying their trade.

Some of the stories have previously appeared on-line, for free, although they have all been updated and improved as per the Editor's suggestions. In fact, those stories that have previously appeared on-line are available to read for free, in their original version, on www.osfer.com.

Why is this? Why does the Editor give stuff away for free -- or rather, why does he remind the readers that it's available? Because FANG is as much about form as it is about function. It isn't just the stories that make FANG desirable, it's the print.. The comfort of reading fiction from clean, off-white pages printed with sharp, deep black, slightly reflective ink in a carefully-selected typeface, on a carefully laid-out page, that's what FANG is about.

So if you absolutely must Know Before You Buy, you can go to www.osfer.com and find all the free editions. If you'd rather be surprised by quality furry authors you may or may not previously be familiar with, here's a list of authors:

    Red Swampwulf
    Stormcatcher
    Kohai
    Mikori
    André "Badger" Blaireau
    Timbo Tiger
    Shaun "Faora" Ryan
    Genken Hikage
    Kyell Gold (author of Volle)
    K. M. Hirosaki (author of the Blue Forest and Maerchentic series)
    Uncle Oakie
    Whyte Yoté

FANG will be released periodically, attempting to rekindle the consumption of the priinted word as it was in the heyday of the periodic sci-fi and horror pulp anthologies, and if the author response for this issue is any indication, it will continue to succeed in its goal. The second issue will contain some of the stories that couldn't be fit in Volume 1G simply because of page limitations, and focus on fantasy-themed erotica. The third issue will break from the erotica theme, to establish FANG's position as a proponent of all furry fiction, and votes are being accepted on the www.osfer.com forums for what the next theme should be!

A speciall horror-themed edition is slated for Halloween, and submissions will be accepted until October 1. Check www.osfer.com for details!

It is nice to have a new way to get our works published. It's also great that we can get non-erotica published. But if the response from we authors and consumers isn't good, then perhaps non-erotica cannot be published seperately from erotica.

Lets step up and see what we can do about that, guys. It's a consumer driven world - lets get behind the wheel.

I'm all for furry fiction in any genre. Maybe we could tie FANG into your story competition, like we talked about over e-mail?

Increase the competition frequency to one every two months or so, and the top three stories of every competition automatically get placed in a special annual Watching Stone edition of FANG. Since you have a fair few submittors already and a non-erotica policy, this'd be a good way to collect good non-yiff authors.

This process is a lot less work for me, so I wouldn't mind taking that on my plate.
