As some of you might know, I'm a supporter and active participant in the SETI@Home initiative, where thousands (maybe millions) of computers across our little dustball voluntarily work together to check the observations of the Arecibo Radio Observatory for signs that might indicate artificial origin, meaning, for signs of Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (ETI).

I was wondering what the other members of PF, meaning YOU, thought about the SETI initiative. Do you think it's useful to search for traces of ETI, do you think mankind isn't ready for that yet, or do you think that it's just a bunch of B******T, and that we should concentrate our efforts elsewhere?

All opinions appreciated, but keep it civil.

PS: For those wondering, my computer processed 274 workunits at the time of writing...

I Ran SETI@home on my PC for years, but on my most recent up grade I have had it conflict with a few games i enjoy so am not running it now.

I think SETI is a good idea we have to be fools to think we were the only planet with life on it. The big question is, is the other life inteligent?

Probably morso than us hopefully, we seem to squander our resources on fighting and advanced fighting techniques.

I always believed that if life exists elsewhere, the fact that they haven't contacted us yet proves their superior intelligence. Why? Because who wants to visit a war torn hate filled world when you've got enough problems in yours? We seem to be the only ones that do. Just some thoughts...

Well, they've had the wit to not contact us yet.

What makes you think life on other planets are more intellegent what if they evolved and learned at the same rate if not slower. But then they may be more intellegent but who knows if there was life on other planets how intellegent they are.

Just a thought, I've read some articles that suggest that our situation may be rarer than we think. Not only do you have to have a planet of the proper size range in the "life zone", but you need a satellite of appreciable mass for general dynamics and a planet like Jupiter and the speculated "Nemesis" to drive the long-term dynamics.

What happens if we're the first intelligent race to arise (assuming we get out of the cradle here and move, first, interplanetary and then interstellar without killing ourselves off). Conversely, what if Turtledove's "The Road Not Taken" is true and we missed something crucial early on and are confined to this system, developing our tech, while there are star-faring races at, say, the tech level of the Roman Empire.
