Is it always the best for the tail to be fleshed out above the flow mark?
The shoulder and Hip cross points how do you know how wide to make them? Practice?
Does the Lower ribcage line always go the opposite of the hour glass? Is it tighter or flatter?
I think need some thing on Brest verses Pecks? More detail on breast and shoulders Please!
I am trying to draw muscular heroes like Hercules or Samson I know I keep getting the shoulders way to wide, but if they are not wide the pictures look like skinny whimps.
Thanks again Great lesson

Yeah.. those are all my problems too..
I also have issues with feet, hands, and hair...
Oh.. and muzzles.. i seem to be able to get the profile view okay.. but 3/4 and straight on give me issues..
I will post one of my works in progress soon
Thanks again for the tutorial man... _________________ If you have never made a fool of yourself you are not in my class.... |

Here's my first try. It kind of sucks. I always seem to make the head too big and then they look all freaky and stuff. But here it is anyway. _________________ ~Kerda

Thanks, everyone.
Its nice to know I have succeeded in my initial offering.
I will be moving into a schedule of heavy deadline pressure very shortly, so my time to update things will be limited.
However, I will attempt to cover a few of the questions here:
Arms and hands-
Hands are about the width of the human face.
If your character's hands are about as wide as the face is- not counting huge cheekruffs, by the way- then they are about right for size.
In many cases, the arms should be about as wide at their widest point as the hands are at their widest point.
Upper arms in some cases are wider than the hands- for big muscled characters, make the bicep just a tad wider than the hand at the hand's widest point.
Shoulders-
Most normally proportioned people are around 3 heads wide at the shoulders.
Meaning- measure how wide the character's head is, and plan the shoulders, outer dimension to outer dimension, to be about 3 times that width.
The rib cage is basically a box that is mostly rigid, inside the main body- which is more flexible.
The "undercut" of the ribs, (diaphragm,) at the top will be pretty much a curved line to define the bottom edge of that box regardless of the way its bent or twisted in movement.
Quick and dirty rule of thumb for hip width versus shoulder width-
Hips are usually wider in females than males.
This is because of the slightly different pelvic bone structure in females to accomodate childbirth. (Wider pelvic opening.)
Start out with the hips the same width as the shoulders in your initial sketch, and widen or shrink the hips depending on whether you are drawing a male or female.
Its a matter of practice from that point- but that will give you a rough idea of where to start.
Tails-
Remember that tails continue out of the lower spine, and bear it in mind as you sketch in the basic shape and the direction they point.
Breasts versus pectoral muscles-
An excellent suggestion- but it will have to wait until I can sit down to devote more than 5 minutes to a proper lesson.
Quickie thing to recall, is that female breasts are essentially a bag of jelly-like fat and some muscle sitting on top of the same upper body muscles guys have-
They are subject to gravity, so they sag instead of sitting up like a balloon on the chest.
(IE- do NOT draw a perfect circle for a breast!- they are basically
open-ended oval shapes that are wider at the bottom, in most cases- unless the breasts are small, in which case the shape is more often kind of like a pear which may or may not curve back into the chest on the underside in profile.)
More than this, I will have to wait on.
I will do a new thread for each subject in order to make quick referrence easier.
