|
|
Well about 4am I got woken up to several large booms... thinking it was thunder (it's been raining here a lot), I looked outside and saw few clouds and no lightning, but did see a large orange glow to the north.
Tired, I thought nothing of it and went back to bed. Turns out it wasn't nothing - a propane facility in the burbs blew up, leading to evacuations of several thousand people, closing of expressways and a subway line, and creating a no fly zone.
So far, no fatalities, but it's still burning.
Some wicked video on YouTube though (I didn't think propane would have enough force to make a mushroom cloud!) -
Explosion 1
Explosion 2

sweet, those are some awesome explosions. Sucks though to hear that people had to be evacuated. _________________ "hey honey, could you tell me if this smells like Cloroform to you?" *holds up a damp rag*

Aye.... I'm wondering what brainiac allowed homes to be built across the street from the propane depot though .. or vice versa.
Take a look at it's location on Google Maps
Apparently one firefighter was fatally wounded, and a depot employee is unaccounted for - sad, but considering how close it was to many homes, could have been much worse _________________ "We're Glad You Could Play Space Quest IV. As Usual, You've Been a Real Pantload."

Actually, according to the article, the company moved into the area long after it had been urbanized. This really is the case of someone planting a hazardous operation in the middle of a residential area. _________________ Read my comic: http://www.ImperialGelf.com

Propane can make a very big explosion. Big enough to send entire an entire railcar several thousand feet through the air when the tank splits in a fire. _________________ Richard Reid

Good to see that this didn't turn out as bad as it could have. I hope this will prompt Canadian lawmakers into revamping zoning codes so as to not put the public in such danger again. |

Yes, the housing in that area is quite old (1950s I believe)... it's former military housing as that area used to be Downsview Air Force Base (that's the runway you can see in the satellite photos directly to the north), which, when built was well beyond the edge of the city. Since then, Toronto has surrounded the area.
I think the housing was sold off cheap to the public in the early 90s when the base was closed.
Now of course, our bozo Mayor has ordered a review of city zoning permits and trying to see how that facility was allowed to be built right beside an existing neighbourhood... better late than never

Indeed - apparently a bus stop several kilometres away had a propane cylinder smashed right through it... _________________ "We're Glad You Could Play Space Quest IV. As Usual, You've Been a Real Pantload."
