I think it was in Maass' book, Writing the Breakout Novel, where he says his office gets around 7500 unsolicited manuscripts per year. He's an agent. He said that 99.9% of them aren't good enough to publish.

The good news is that 7 or 8 are worth a second look. Very Happy

Brilliant! A masterstroke of apparent accidental negotiation.

I heard there was one short story sci-fi publisher who pays 20 cents per word. Twenty cents! Who pays that much?

Would you belive the Sci-Fi Channel's website? I don't know that they pay that much to real authors, maybe just name authors. Money is nice, but is website publishing "real"? The SFWA doesn't think so. Also, I heard the website looses money for the Sci-Fi channel every year. Maybe the big payments will stop at some point.

Incidentally, is that where you found this, Mike?
