They also have a kind of apple in Japan that's huge, but for all that size it's pretty much tasteless. I wonder if the grapes are similarly lacking.

What kind is that? The only Japanese variety I'm familiar with is the Fuji, which is okay but not my favorite.

I think it is the fuji they were about the size of a large grapefruit but pretty tasteless like I said.

Yeah, I have had some pretty bland fujis. There is a variety of it called the Grapple which is supposed to taste like a large grape and what I've had of those have been pretty good. When it comes to apples for just snacking on I prefer either a good Braeburn or a Jonagold when I can find them at a reasonable price.
