I had to take a niece of mine to see her grandmother today and on the way I saw something which I hadn't seen before. Not to far outside my neighborhood there was a tractor doing some mowing. Not unusual by itself but it's what it was using to mow down inside a ditch that I had not seen before. Don't know what it's called but it was some kind of mowing device attached to the end of a mechanical swing arm which the operator of the tractor used to mow down inside the ditch. Makes sense because the side of the ditch was fairly steep and would have been difficult to mow otherwise. Probably a common piece of equipment but like I said I had never seen it before and thought it was kind of neat.

So anybody else seen something they haven't seen before today?

They've been using them for at least a decade, probably two here in Norway.

Makes an awful racket when they hit glass bottles, rocks or anything else, though...

And as the mowing unit can be swung up, it's also used to trim small branches of trees that are close to the road, improving visibility in corners and intersections.

Edit:
It was something like the one pictured HERE?

Edit2:
HERE's a link to an English Language page for such mowers.
