Try clearing the CMOS by using the jumper on the motherboared after unplugging the poawer supply from the wall outlet (you'll have to refer to your system manual) if there is no jumper just unplug the power cord and remove the CMOS battery for 15 minutes or so after putting the battery back in turn on the pc you should get a CMOS checksum bad or simalar message. Go into MOS load defaults and redo your settings.

You probably don't have to replace the battery at all. Since this happened after a power failure, they can sometimes mess up the CMOS cuasing strange problems. To find out if the battery really needs to be replaced, shut down the system and unplug it for five minutes if when you turn it back on everything is fine so is the battery if not you'll get that battery is low message again. either way it's not a good idea to change the battery while the system is plugged in or when you add or remove anything on the board, it takes very little to kill the bios or something else.

I have a question for all you Linux fanatics out here.
I've been trying to set up my machine as a dual boot between XP and some form of linux. I've taken my 160GB hard drive and divided it into 3 partitions, about 25GB for XP and applications, for some reason 103GB for files, and the rest for linux. at first I tried installing fedora core 6, cos we're gonna be using fedora in my linux class. so it seemed to install just fine, but every time I would select it from the boot screen, wait for it to load up, it would stop and tell me here's a problem with X something, I forget which, not X windows tho.
so someone tells me to try unbuntu. I clear away fedora and install that. but now it'll only boot up in safe mode, if I try to boot up normally the screen goes black and stays that way.
what the heck am I gonna do? I worry about screwing up the partitions, especially my windows one, I tried putting the installer disc in to clear the linux partition, but the screen goes black after the "checking your hardware" text.
so fa the only lead I've gotten is that it's probably my motherboard, a Intel D845GRG with onboard graphics.
and does anyone here think that my windows installer problem could be because I recently got a new monitor? it's just a plug and play lcd widescreen

You might want to get the Virtual PC from Microsoft Thylo. You can install a virtual machine on your computer and its a bit easier to deal with than having to do a full dual boot on a system. The only bad thing about it I would say is that you have to share some of the system resources when using it so it might be just a bit slow.

it's working now, and I don't have nearly enough ram to do a virtual machine.

the problem that's ticking me off now is this.
say I want to do a clean install of windows, I pop in the installation CD and reboot. I get the "press any key to boot from CD" message, so I press the key, then I get the "checking your hardware..."message, but immediatly after that, the screen goes blank, I try waiting, but nothing happens. the only difference between now and my other installs is that I have an Envision LCD monitor. my linux intallers will come up fine, but Windows refuses

I don't think it really matters when going through USB; USB 2.0 has a max transfer rate of 480 Mega bits per second which if I did my math right is only 60mb per second max ATA 133 or SATA 150 can exceed these speeds.

You have several systems don't you? If you have a system you don't have anything important on, you can use it as a test bed.
