Arraborough – The epic struggle for faunal dominion, in 9 books

Book 1: The Unimaginable Road (synopsis)

When his parents are murdered by a revolutionary syndicate known as the Serpent Society, a young man named Slither Snake decides the only way to ensure the safety of himself and his remaining family is simply to escape and hide. Establishing a commune on a small patch of isolated land, Slither invites family and friends to join him in creating an environment free from the deep-laid intrigues of present society. After a year of construction, a farming commune known as “Arraborough” is founded, and Slither and a dozen friends find themselves embarked on a road to an unimaginable future.

Yet nothing is what it seems. The denizens are a disparate bunch. Many hide painful secrets which only serve to exacerbate existing tensions. A mischievous armadillo uses her rapport with a strange colour ball to plumb the depths of the denizen’s psyches, only to learn there are some depths better left unexplored. A dog’s jealousy explodes into potential violence, and he becomes the first animal to be expelled from the commune.

And the land itself is far from benign. It comes with a mysterious caretaker named Fespin Squirrel who issues confusing warnings about the nearby impenetrable forest and the foreboding caverns lying underneath the surface. A visit by apes ends in tragedy when Katu Marmoset is found dead in the cavern antechamber and Grimbold Gorilla disappears in the caverns. When Robespire Baboon claims Katu’s body, he confronts Fespin, who claims to have past ties to the primate Master, and who disavows his role in some unknown war.

Wild Boar disappears without a trace, but the worries of his friends are soothed by Wild’s supposed friend, Spiny Anteater, who arrives on an extended stay. But Spiny’s true agenda in the commune remains unknown, as do the agendas of two other mystery figures, ones distinguished by abnormal coloration and gem-like eyes: Pimlico Calico, who oversees the final stages of the commune’s construction; and Dovan Blue Dog, who hopes a stay in Arraborough will awaken memories of a lost life and his role in an unknown war being waged for dominion of the entire animal planet itself.
