Next chapter they will need to be more creative in the reason for no comment since it will be all new and not a rework.

Hmmm, depending on just what's in there, it may take a day or two for the stun reaction to wear off....

Eagerly awaiting the news there's a new chapter, Nicolai .. that is, if you're still writing in this series. ^_^

Just so everyone here knows, that don't peruse the new forum, my muse has kicked me in the direction of the Coonaverse..

And I have a title "Everything in its Season" ^_^

Now to get the stuff I've written into electronic form and sent to the proofers for analyzing. Shocked

How bad a crash?

Metal filings pouring out, or 'cannot find NTLDR, system halted' type of crash?

Oh, and Nicolai should be very careful about going out at night.
He may be hit over the head with a cod...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijk8GQZP1pA

And yes, they're singing about 'torsk' which is the norwegian word for cod...
(I figure that should be surreal enough to make Nicolai forget his HDD for a little while... )

But if he doesn't start taking regular backups...

Sorry to hear that Nicolai's rig crashed on him-that's a bummer.

If it's not too far gone, a Knoppix Live CD might be used to retrieve the data on the HDD and burn it to CD.

I use a Western Digital portable HDD to back up my laptop and my tower. Been through that "lost everything" deal years ago (1996) so I've kept my stuff backed up first on Zip100, then Zip250, now the portable HDD for the laptop and DVD for the tower. Cheap insurance against a crash.

This is what I use from NewEgg.com:

WD 320gb My Passport Essentials

Interestingly, the first review is a gentleman that bought it just to gut the HDD out of it! Shocked

Compaq has NEVER used proprietary connectors on the HDD.

What they have is a container/enclosure with a proprietary interface, but on the inside there's a completely normal 2.5" HDD with normal interfaces.

Trust me on this, I've been fighting their HW since the 386sx based 'breadbox' portables.

Edit:
My weapon of choice for salvaging data frombroken HDDs is File Rescue Professional

It's not free, but it has paid itself back for me, several times over.
(Not my files, of course, I have backups)
I've pulled files from flaky MemorySticks(using a PC-card type reader.), wobbly drives, partially overwritten partitions...
Just one thing; It seems to not work too well on USB-attached drives if there's a HW problem.

Well, in this case it's just as bad as a proprietary connector. It's a 44 pin card edge connector that plugs directly onto the mobo. The cassette just supports the h/d in the proper position. I just spent a wasted 45 minutes on tech support chat, only to find that the only thing they really do is troubleshoot. They have no technical information at all, nor any access to it. What I need is an adapter to let me connect the h/d to an EIDE cable so that I can check the drive itself. The tech I was chatting with seemed to have a great deal of difficulty with that concept.

The computer has had a number of problems, including loss of the on-board modem and ethernet controllers. The power button is also badly intermittent. These problems, plus its age, is what lead to its replacement.

I used a Linux live CD to boot the system (the only way it can be booted) and the h/d is unmountable. It is detected, but it cannot be read. I'm hoping that the problem is the mobo h/d controller and not the h/d itself. However, since the optical drive still works, that may be a pointless dream and nothing more. Since I got laid off a week ago, I no longer have the funds to pay for data recovery.

If you have a desktop machine you can plug it into you'll need one of these adapters:

http://www.bay-wolf.com/hddadapter.htm

And yes, ALL 2.5" HDDs have a 44pin interface. The big difference between the standard IDE40 and the IDE44 is that power is included in the interface.

But if the drive is wonky, don't expect miracles...
(I can't remember ONE HP/Compaq laptop at the office where the interface had died, instead of the HDD... and we have a lot of the darn things)

you may also find these adapters onebay or dealextreme.com (site seems down at the moment) and if you're willing to wait a few days extra, you may get it for a bit less there.

One SW tool I like to use to recover data from partially broken drives is fileRescue Professional.
http://www.objectrescue.com/products/filerescuepro/
It's not free, but it works...
(There's a demo version that can be downloaded, then enabled as full version as soon as you pay for it. It will read the drive, if possible, and should give you a good idea what is possible to recover)

Well, Anthony, in this case it isn't a 44-pin connector, per se. It's probably the difference between the US model and the Norwegian model.

It has 44 pins, yes. But it is a card edge connector and not an IDE pin connector. I haven't found an adapter to fit, yet, although I've seen one or two listed that might work. Just haven't found one yet that I can handle before I buy it.

In other news:

Chapter 24 of Change of Seasons is back underway. It's not going real fast at the moment, but progress is being made. If I can keep up the current pace, it should be ready for the proofers in a couple weeks.

I do need to have TM get me his email. I tried PM'ing him and haven't had a reply yet. Lost his email when my old computer went south. The same goes for anyone else who hasn't already sent theirs.

Question I had this stranger camp out in my head. She claims she's my muse. I'm confused. I thought she left. Razz

I know that some of the older Compaqs have edge connectors on the MoBo, but the HDD is still a normal IDE/compact 44pin IDE for laptops.
The problem is the shell the HDD is built into. That can sometimes be a royal pain in the split area to get open...
(I have rescued data from so many laptop HDDs that I've lost count.)

Be that as it may, Anthony, I have the hard drive sitting here on my desk, and the connector is mounted directly to the hard drive. No adapter involved anywhere. If it didn't cost so much, I'd send the thing to you and let you rescue my data. But international shipping is a cost I simply can't afford or justify. Sad

There was no cassette on my old laptop. It was just a thin stamped metal retainer that held the hard drive to the plastic 'door' that actually attached to the case and secured the hard drive in place.

Anthony, I will get you a photo one of these days, I'll probably PM it.

Let's get this forum back on topic.

Chapter 24 will be sent to Mike either tomorrow or Tuesday, depending on whether I get any comments from my proofers tonight.
