Things may be a bit slow for a bit here.
The hard drive on one of my comps has taken a dive. Now I have to redo it from scratch. Problem? Last clone I made of that drive was Jan. 4, 2005.
Bad Raccoon. Things have changed greatly since then. As I get each thing restored and operating normally I will make a back up at that point.
Needless to say this is going to take a lot of time.
Really need to get a better schedule for full drive back ups. _________________ "Who was that masked librarian?"

I might suggest getting a system that has an RAID 1 array if you are going to be upgrading anytime soon, it mirrors a image of the main drive so if one takes a dump your not SOL. _________________ There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

The data is auto backed up all the time, it's all the programs that I need to reinstall that is the problem.
Once they are in again I just copy the data back. _________________ "Who was that masked librarian?"

RAID 1 is a total waste of disk space...
(Well, you 'waste' half the disks in mirroring)
RAID 5 is the way to go as you only 'waste' one disk out of the entire array. _________________ "My name's Lion, Anthony Lion"

Hack attempt?
Found this in my requested page log on the raccoons-bookshelf.net server
/w00tw00t.at.ISC.SANS.DFind:)
Note that last is a : and ) not a smiley.
Checking it on Google brought up a large number of pages reporting it and notes that it is a vulnerability checking tool. Largely believed to be used by hackers to find a way into systems. All the ones mentioned in the Google articles were Linux servers.
Most had code after it to try and break into the server and made several attempts with different codes.
I only had one hit from it since late Friday night (PT) and all seems to be working OK. _________________ "Who was that masked librarian?"

Hmm. I hope they didn't find a way in. _________________ Nadan

The Bookshelf.net server is down.
Power is out here. Will be back up when it is.

OK, back up again. Hope that was the last today. Was out for an hour and a half this time instead of the 8 hours we had last summer. _________________ "Who was that masked librarian?"

For a fur who retired from a company that generated power, you sure seem to have a lot of trouble with that, Mike. <winks> Connection?

I worked for LADWP and now my power is served by SCE.

Just an advisory, the Raccoon's Bookshelf.net server and email will be down for a short while.
This will be for a bit of rewiring work. Found that some of my stuff did not get connected to my UPS during that last outage.
I will be making sure that it is all plugged in correctly. Job should not take more than 30 mins. _________________ "Who was that masked librarian?"

The raccoon will be a bit scarce over the next couple of days.
Nothing bad, just making up a spare hard drive with all my programs on it so if something does crash I can just swap out and pull in the back up data files. _________________ "Who was that masked librarian?"

Forgot to mention this here but last week, Wed., my laptop died.
Got the return shipping box yesterday and sent it out today. Hope to be back in normal operation before too much longer. _________________ "Who was that masked librarian?"

Don't bet on it, SonicBlu was off a couple weeks waiting for his to be fixed.
But then, maybe you're not dealing with Best Buy. _________________ "Cogito, ergo es. I think, therefore you is." Ray D. Tutto (King of the Moon) to Baron Munschaussen |

I hope not. UPS tracking reports they delivered it today @ 10:53 am ET.
With luck I will have it back late next week. (Please?)
This spare machine has only 256 Meg of RAM and runs XP like a pig.
Need to fix that A$AP. Emphasis on the $. _________________ "Who was that masked librarian?"
