Later on today, I will be putting my laptop under the knife for a new SSD installation. I purchased a SanDisk 1Tb Solid State Drive to replace the 750Gb original drive in my Dell 17R.

One, I needed to do a clean install due to the mess that Win 10 free upgrade install over the top of my Win 7 made. Granted the install was better, but it was still garbage laden with programs I don't need any more.

Two, I want to do a dual-boot with Ubuntu 20.04. I'm preparing for that day Micro$oft puts out its hand, letting me know Windows is now a subscription only deal. I've already left all Adobe products behind and as robust as Ubuntu has become, I may not need Windows at all someday.

Anyway, I'll be back to let all y'all know what happens. Worst case scenario is I have to put the old drive back in and whip up another approach. Hopefully, it doesn't involve a new laptop.

Be back in a while,

Kel Mr. Green

If you have specific needs that are dependent on Windows, then dual booting or virtualizing an instance of Windows 10 should be fine along-side Ubuntu or other versions of Linux. I personally do this for gaming that has no Linux option, albeit usually with two separate drives, however there are plenty of guides to do this properly. EFI can make this a little easier in some respects, if your hardware supports it. Plus, updating to Windows 10 from older unsupported versions will minimize the risk of being compromised by un-patched vulnerabilities. Be mindful that Windows 10 comes with a decent amount of junk and privacy related issues, most of which can be mitigated for the time being.

If you haven't already, check out Linux Mint. The Cinnamon UI reflects the design language from classic versions of Gnome 2 without trying to go too far toward the "mobile" or "touchscreen" aesthetic of Gnome 3 or Unity, which I feel makes it a bit easier to use if you're more familiar with versions of Windows 7 and older. They have a good team maintaining the project.

Well, my needs aren't much. I use LibreOffice for writing, Scribus for compiling my writing into a printable format and I use Gimp for my image manipulations. The only games I run are Sim City 4 and Hoyle Board Games. Somewhere I have a copy of Hoyle Card Games and Hoyle Casino, but that's the extent of Windows-based games I enjoy.

I've been poking around with Ubuntu and Kubuntu as bootable live distros on USB sticks, so far I like straight Ubuntu better. Never did like that KDE desktop, probably because it's too Windows-llike.

I'll take a look at Linux Mint to see what's the rumble about that flavor.

BTW, I did the update, now have Windows 10 on my machine, I have not done the update to 20H2 yet. I have all the items I need for my work/hobby and so far I'm happy with the install. Takes about sixteen seconds from cold start to up and running. Fastest booting machine I have ever used, by the way.

Like I said, though; when Redmond, Washington decides Windows is a subscription deal, I'm out. That was the reason I ditched all Adobe products, when It became a subscription deal to keep using their programs. I have over forty gigs worth of images and some six gigs worth of documents in pdf format so I'll be damned if I pay for yearly use of a product.

The upgrade was completed but there was some confusion as to which verion was being installed. It turns out it was version 1909 that was dropped on my new SSD hard drive. Yeah. Not what I was expecting but ya know, it works. All except running games, that is.

It would seem Windows 10 considers Secure Loc and other types of DRM on CD/DVD not secure, a major security hole. As if Edge isn't? Anyway, going to try to install VirtualBox, then Linux Mint-Cinnamon with Wine + DirectX 9 and see if I can run a few games under a Virtual Machine. Man, this has really been an eye-opener as I have two productivity pieces of software that are now obsolete and a number of games that will not run under Windows 10 build 1909.

Still would like the Linux Mint to get used to running a *unix type program again. That's for the day the 'tards at Redmond, Washington decide to stick their hands out, telling me Windows is now a subscription based product. Get my drift?

Anyway, that's all for now.

Mr. Green
