For the past several weeks I've been thinking, brainstorming, and drawing concepts for what will become a 3d project called The Minotaur. My idea is to model and texture the caracter, and model a believeable background.
So far I haven't started modeling just yet, but here are my concepts.
And here is the first sketch

Hehe... that's funny.
How did you come to the conclusion that I would use 3dsmax? I think it's funny because... I was considering doing just that. But more than likely I was going to do it in Blender. The current CVS build has better fur, so I was more inclined to use it.
(however, there is a free fur plugin for 3dsmax - http://www.ibmr.net/Ornatrix/)
I have a good reason to brush up my skills with 3dsmax as well- It's a tool of the industry that I'm more familiar with. |

Well don't bother using fur, if you don't know the basics.
Unfortunatelly blender's handling of complex bone structures are rather crappy, bone x,y, and z orientation sucks. 3d studio is a somewhat better at
this. I've tried Ornatrix fur/hair before, it just doesn't work out all that well
for furred characters. Joe Alter's Shave and Haircut is a few million times
better than anything available.. and only works in Maya. Though Alias got
their own fur system, that's proven to be quite powerful. Maya is and or
Softimage are the 3D CAD packages of choice. Nothing else even comes
close to what these have to offer, 3D Studio Max is more designed for the
gaming industry, not for the film industry.
And when it comes to particle systems, and the ability to set driven keys..
Maya beats all hands down.

Well, I have a great interest in game programming and 3d modeling/animation, so 3ds Max is the obvious choice for me. Also, Shag Hair is supposed to be really good so I'm not too worried there.
I have also started the Minotaur. It was originally done in Blender, but a friend convinced me to abandon the software (which I won't completely do) as it was not used by the professionals (which both of us want to become). So, I convert it over and continued work on it within 3ds Max. It is a continuos learning process that I will enjoy greatly.
The goal, however, is to learn 3ds Max, Maya, and Photoshop CS 2 inside and out, and create lots of content in these programs so that I have something to show when I try to get that dream job.

Thanks. I never seem to finish anything, but I'm hoping that I'll finish this one.
I worked 6 hours non-stop on it today. (well, yesterday... it's 2am now). And here is the result:
