Well, five days to go to T-day. I thought I'd better get this thread opened so there is a place for all you remarkable furs to put your thoughts about my writing. T2 will start off with 2 chapters being posted the first week. I'm doing this because of the nature of chapter 1, which does include new material but also a lot of recollection from 'Transitions'. Fikrann suggested that in order for old readers to have something real to work with, I should post both chapter 1 and 2 the first week.

Since her advice is generally very sound, I'll do that Smile

Looking forward to it! Very Happy

Yay! Something I can actually relate too. I like AVC, but roman really wasnt my area of study. I was more into the Brittish Isles at that point in time. But AVC is still a very good read. Very Happy

But I'm looking forward to all the updates.

*giggles* well, as Valaina said only a few days ago,

'Jean seems to be your everyday self...but we all need a Gabby'.

I couldn't agree more. And since Jean only has one tail and Gabrielle certainly sticks to one...I can't cross tails.

Anyway...Fikrann got the router to work. Go read Smile

Good read.

I found the recaps of the first part a bit distracting. But that is a pretty widely used device and useful for anyone who hasn't read the first part (recently), so I won't complain.

I agree very much with Lizzy on the end of the communist system, I find it difficult to understand how anybody could not see her point... But I'd probably better stop here before I statt a debate (or a discussion or whatever)... Wink

Hehe...communism has never actually been tried as a system.

Marxism has, however. Marxism is the system which is used to introduce communism, but noone has ever -reached- communism.

According to Karl Marx and Friedrich Engells, in order to reach communism a country first has to go through a series of logical stages. It starts with a hunter-gatherer culture without any kind of rule or government at all and moves on to basic tribal cultures, over large tribal units encompassing larger areas, to monarchy, to feudalism, to absolute monarchy/autocracy and so on.

The second to last stage is capitalism. Capitalism is characterized by greatly a industrialized society with enormous production capacity and tremendous wealth...but a wealth which is unevenly divided. Capitalism is the big enemy of communism of course, because of these tremendous divides in society. Huge gaps between rich and poor and those that are rich are very, very few. Eventually, the huge masses of the poor and downtrodden will rebel against the few, but powerful rich and create a blissful utopia where everyone not only has equal chances and equal wealth...but -enough- wealth.

It is a utopian system, for a whole slew of reason. It can't ever happen although needless to say the complete removal of poverty, hunger and disease would be wishful thinking for most people. However...it just can't be done since human beings are greedy by nature. We might want our neighbours to do well for themselves...as long as we do a -little- bit better, ourselves.

Lizzy's argument is that Marxism was dead within five years of the Russian revolution, because after that, the socalled New Economic Policy (NEP) for short, introduced by Lenin, totally destroyed the Marxist ideal.

The biggest problem, of course, was that Russia wasn't a capitalist country when the revolution struck. It was an autocracy. It was -not- a wealthy country with a huge industrial base but primarily agrarian. The prerequisites for communism were not in place.

Like one of my old teachers told the class in business school:

'If we had picked up the phone 30 years ago and called Brezhnev, and asked him 'Hello Mr. Brezhnev, do you have communism in Russia?' the likely answer would've been 'No...but we're working on getting there'.'

That which has been labelled the big enemy in the United States since McCarthy...the big red scare, the communist terror...was in reality a fear of a different kind of totalitarian system...Stalinism...which was just as awful as National Socialism.

Communism has never been tried...but the perfect Communist system can be seen at any time by turning on one's TV and watching 'Star Trek: the Next Generation'. That is used in political science classes as an example of a communist utopia. Unreal...even surreal and completely unachievable.

So...that's what Lizzy argued Razz Try to sell that to most lecturers stateside though...not much chance.

Brick wall

Thank you for that GREAT bit of dialog on the differences between the theoretical social/governmental systems and what was ACTUALLY shoved down the peons' "collective" throats. I studied this before you were born (hey, I'm OLD---) and while the knowledge and facts have been there all along, over the years, it's no longer TAUGHT that way in the schools here in the States. It's not "politically correct" to criticise communism and Marxism, and even fascism is often given far too "soft" an explanation---since many of the professors feeding the crap to the high school/college-age kids are card-carrying socialists (if not wannabe communists) themselves. They HATE the republic form of government, and think democracy is "passe" and should be replaced. Shame on you

Makes me wanna PUKE---! #Cussing out

You very clearly laid it out, chapter and verse, Joan. Many thanks! Cool

(And Ch.s 1 & 2 of Transitions 2 were fine.) Wink

Wondering...

The story is called Transitions, and deals with (extreme) changes in the characters lives... right?

Now, Jean's life is about to change again, but not as extremely as before(unless marriage can be considered that extreme) so, while she will feature in this story, I doubt she will be the focus...

Gabby and Yohni?
Well, they are going to travel through Europe, and things can happen...
They've already met a helpful male. Is he just friendly, or does he have ulterior moties?
Does Gabby or Yohni have ulterior motives?

The SNF...
Lizzy and Miriam seems to be OK with their boyfriends, and that leaves Emma...
She had an accident, that could have been very serious. She also has a boyfriend who seems to be OK, but what do we know about him?

Too many possibilities... Need more story...

Smile

The Mercedes Taxi was a nice touch. They're quite common here in Norway, too. (There's a sprinkling of Audis, Citroëns and other large and comfy cars, too)

A wonderful beginning, my Lady. Very Happy

And an interesting disclosure of the differences between Marxist Communism and Lenin's Reign of Terror©.

But, back to the topic...

Something here just seems very not right. I sense a disturbance in the Force...

In any case, it'll be interesting for me to watch this one play out, rather than coming into things after all is said and done.

Well, I'm socialist by nature...in a strictly European sense of the word, mind you. Socialist here doesn't mean we jump up on the barricades, waving red banners and shouting down the system...it means we support ideals developed from the social democratic basis.

However, your line is fairly interesting...

'Democracy' is a word stemming from two Greek words...'Demos', meaning 'people' and 'kratos' meaning 'rule'.

'The people's rule', in other words. One man, one vote. Such a system only exists in Switzerland today...where they have a direct democracy, meaning that EVERY law passed is put up for popular referendum (they vote for them en bloque these days...out of necessity).

'Republic' is a Roman, Latin word...coming from 'Res' and 'Publicus'. 'To rule' and 'The public'.

One of these systems means ruling from below and up, the other means ruling from the top down. Neither is really in use in a perfected form anywhere anymore. Anyway...enough political systems ramblings from me Very Happy

Thank you all for the good reception of Transitions 2. There's quite a lot of story to tell in this one...and don't worry, the reason why I kept the name 'Transitions' should become clear around chapter 5.
