I write many words. But your post is good feedback for me.
Basically, go play with the system--no harm, no foul.
Basic instructions:
- Go to the Anthrofiction Network's website (or take a more direct link, above). Too many words? The last section will go away after a few weeks, and the top section will eventually migrate to its own page.
- Either skim down the page till you spot the heading that says "Participate in the Contest" then click the "current contest" link, or click on the "Current Contest" link in the navigation widget (top left).
- The main contest page is, "Short Story Contest for Spring 2006". Is it too big or just right? I put the link, "the contest entry page" waaaaay down at the bottom (probably bad of me)--but in the navigation widget, new links have appeared: "Contest Theme", "Contest Rules", "Enter the Contest", and a link to the sample story.
- Let's assume you know the theme and rules, so click on either entry link to enter the contest.
- The first entry page. Too wordy? I'm still working on the instructions for the fine points of formatting your story, but if you don't need italics or other unusual formats then you should be fine. I'd love to know how you do on this page. Options: "Try It" or "Reset Form".
- The system will chew on your story for a moment then either take you to the second entry page, or kick you back to the first with your text put back in the form. At the moment, you need to stuff between 1000 and 3500 words in the "Paste the body of your story here:" box, or you get kicked back.
- On the second entry page you can view your story. The area between the bars will have the exact format that the public will see when they judge your story later, so make sure it looks right. Three choices: "Try Again", "Onward!", or "Quit".
- "Try Again" takes you back to entry page one, "Onward!" takes you to page three, and "Quit" takes you back to the main contest page.
- On the third entry page you fill in some personal data: Name and e-mail are required. Then select a few options and click the "Submit Entry" button. The "Reset Form" button doesn't quite work. If you get to page three and you don't want to enter the contest (you're just trying out the system) then leave me a comment that you're just trying it.
- "Reset Form" does nothing useful, but if you clicked "Submit Entry" you get a fourth entry page that pretty much says you're in. Nothing else automatically happens on the site.
- I'll e-mail you to say, "You're in!" and send you a PDF file of your story (or your test text) as a check that all is working. I will host the stories on the site during the judging period.
Well... I write many words. Are there some that you feel are unnecessary?
Thanks a million.

Yeah, I'd already been poking around inside the site for a while before you wrote this. Didn't try out the story thing or nothing, but other than that, it looks great. I like the little countdown timer on the page. Very professional Also, I like the fact that I'm not going to have to worry about Yahoo! again... _________________ <This space reserved for some random nonsense.> |

Just to verify (yes, you can call me an averiguado), we can still use aliases, correct? I'm not really into giving out my name to anyone who wants to see it... _________________ <This space reserved for some random nonsense.> |

TWO ENTRIES
There is a bit less than 12 hours to go until the entry deadline and I have only two entries.- No_Idea_What_I'm_Doing
- Dr. Kayngi
I think there were a few other people who were interested.
I don't think anyone missed it, but the URL is: Anthrofiction Network
Two stories is hardly a contest. It would be nice to have at least three.

I put two in, and had no problem at my end. The forms seemed to work for me.
Maybe you should extend the finish line to get more entries?
I admit I've been sadly amiss at checking this site, busy with other things. Maybe there are more like me? Or even that need more time to write?
If you hadn't IM'd me, I still wouldn't have known about the deadline.

Good, mine got there. I wasn't sure because my internet connection failed right after I left the enty page. What a relief... _________________ <This space reserved for some random nonsense.> |

Sorry but as I said, I am too busy with some non-furry short stories I am hoping to get published. I'll join in next contest. _________________ Tygon Panthera - name and species

I remember....
There is so much more I'd like to do with the site as far as making it easier to use. A big fat maybe, but in time for next season I'd love to have login required to see the stories. The main purpose being so they are not published just to be in the contest (the legal definition of published). But as a side artifact, I could save the state of writers' stories, and save the state of readers' ballots. I'd also like to build a critique system, but that may have to wait until fall.
TWO MORE ENTRIES
It looks like there is about 2 hours before the deadline (pesky UTC time on the server).
- The Flight of the Silver Phoenix
- The Dance
- The Stinkfields and the McChips Feud
- Preacher Bennie Bunny
With four stories we have a horse race, so it will be a real competition. Unfortunately, I've been go, go, go the past few days and haven't had time to carefully look over the stories to see they fully comply with the theme. I'm converting stories to PDF at the moment. I've completed the first three.
I'm not sure what to do about Asalis. I think he worked on a story and I sent him a message, but he's not seen it yet. I may go snag his story for him, but I'd like permission first.

ScottyDM wrote: | The Date
I will hold the date of the 20th. No more slipping. That's 23:59:59 Greenwich Mean Time, not six or seven hours later. My other server is a tier-two time server, so the server the Anthrofiction Network is hosted on is within about 1/10 of a second of absolute time (UTC) which is close enough to GMT (+/- 1 second). |

Ummm, I lied. I did slip the date by 24 hours.
Officially, I'd like to open the next contest and anounce the theme on June 1st, but that's not going to happen. I may close the voting period a few days earlier than June 21st. I'm thinking the 15th then start the new contest and anounce the scores the next day. I don't have a theme yet, but I do have a couple of ideas.
I don't want to slip any more. And with four entries I'm not going to blow off the spring season.
1 hour and 51 minutes....

The Judging Period is Officially Open
So bang a gong. Ring a bell. Tell you family and friends. Tell your mother too (she'll give your story a good score).
The Anthrofiction Network is Ready to Rock-n-Roll
The stories are up--in HTML and PDF formats.
The ballot pages are fully functional.
The home page is redesigned and stripped down so your family and friends will not become confused when the go to the site.
Unfortunately, the more I work on this, the more I learn. The more I learn the more I realize it could be better. No rest for me. However, I'll take my mad server scripting and crazy page coding to a test site. Meanwhile, the main site stays at this level of functionallity.
I also still have ugly bits, which I need to take care of.

#1. Eaten by cannibals while trekking across Borneo.
#2. Ran off with the cook and was last seen in Cincinatti bussing tables in a greasy spoon.
Ummmm, no....
Actually, #1 is Nadan. Because he started it.
#2 is me, but I withdrew my story because it was incomplete--and it is ineligible to win anything. I should finish it, I suppose.

Some nice stories have been entered this season. I've got my ballots in. Have you? _________________ Nadan
