I notice I can search for x OR y in a thread and the words x or y shows up somewhere in the thread.
I can search for x AND y and both x and y show up somewhere in the thread.
HOWEVER...
When I search "x y", I do not get the two words together as a phrase, but return results like x AND y.
Why can't I search for phrases? |

Quoting the phpBB Userguide:
Quote: | To increase the speed and decrease the overhead of the search utility, only words may be searched for. Phrases (such as "cheese wheel") may not be searched for, except by their component words. The minimum size for words is four characters, and the maximum size is twenty characters. Any non-alphanumeric character (e.g. white space and punctuation) is a word boundary. |
Unfortunately, the core design of the search engine built into phpBB is designed to index words to their associated messages. It does not include phrase or fulltext searching natively.
Some people on the phpBB forums and related sites have some suggestions to accomplish modifying the search engine functionality, so once I have a free moment to test some of their suggestions I'll try it on the development system. |
