I'm seriously starting to wonder if Christmas is gradually crossing over the line of a 'media-produced holiday'. The first cristmassy advert I saw this year was in October. But what really infuriates me is the large light-up Santa that waves at me from my neighboor's garden across the road every evening.

*Loads air rifle*

But the question is, would you actually bother with Christmas AT ALL if everyone else wasn't doing it? So picture yourself in a society where there is no media and no one has a desire to make large sums f money they don't actually need. Aside from the constant bliss that this perfect world would provide anyway, would you like to make it even more blissful by celebrating Christmas?

... think carefully now ...

If I had to choose a holiday to celebrate this time of year based on aesthetics alone, I'd probby choose Hanuka, It really apeals to me. Seven nights of nice, quiet parties with your family and friends, one small token of affection for people each night...Just sounds so nice. Better than building up for Christmas, waiting and waiting, then getting up, ripping the paper of random stuff for a half hour, piling you stuff against the wall, cleaning up the paper and shuffling off to Church. (Catholic, yeah, I know) I keep telling my parents we should do everything gift-related on the Eve, that way we could just have a relaxing morning, a family breakfast, and then head off to Church together as a family, instead of a bunch of people all thinking about what they'll use and what will sit in their closet for the next 3 months before we throw it out.

If it was not for Christmas, Hunakah would be the second media produced holiday. Why? Companies know that on certain days of the year- gift giving is a must, so they'll milk the cash cow until they can get nothing but cheese from its utter.

Christmas, Hunakah and several other holidays belong in your heart and not in your wallets. Its to show that you care enough to appriecate the other person and to help those less fortunate than yourself. it is to celebrate the miracles of the history's past and to cherish what little you got even if you got nothing at all.

I can not stand the media hype behind the holidays as well, but in the least, we can enjoy each other.

I LOVE the holidays. Snow, the scent of pine in the house, curling up with a nice mug of hot chocolate... how can you not? ^^

here here--Don't get me wrong, I consider Christmas a very spiritual event (for me at least) and value it all the more--I'm just saying so far as the social celebration goes, Hanuka seems nicer...Though the huge family dinner at my aunt's house every year does kick so much ass.

To each their own is what I've always said.

What I hate about the christmas season is that the stores are putting up christmas junk earlier every year. Last year it was around the first part of November. This year middle of October, they took down some of the Halloween stuff just to make room for the Christmas junk. I wonder how long it'll be before the just leave the Christmas stuff up year 'round.

Also the idiotic drivers that shouldn't have a liscence to begin with increase their time on the road to buy Christmas presents. During the rest of the year I haven't had to worry much about getting hit by one of these drivers because there's no big sales, or hurry up and get this before they sell out rushes. Just a week after I got in an accident in my van I was almost hit on the good side by some stupid **** that didn't even bother to check her damned mirrors, let alone turn her head around and look where your going like you're suposed to, backed up she was about an inch away from ruining the other side when she noticed and stopped, and she only noticed because I layed on my horn. This is in Wallmarts parking lot, which after almost getting hit I'm going past one of the doors and some teenage girl runs out from the building right in front of me forcing me to slam on the brakes and out to a car that was apparently waiting for her. Didn't bother looking to see if there were cars coming from any direction just ran out.

This is way I dispise shopping during Christmas, at least during the day anyways, at night the idiots disapear.

Where have you been, Scifer? Christmas has been a commercial even at least since Coke Cola managed to put Santa Claus permanentely in a red coat. Before that he wore brown (mostly).

I've gotten sick of Christmas being turned into a purely commercial event.

Don't get me wrong, the season has NOTHING to do with Christ. That was just the Pope trying to usurp the pagan winter festivals. (Ask any Catholic priest if you don't believe me..... Preferrably a Jesuit one as they're cool about admitting stuff like that.)

As a kid, I loved getting the presents. When I was in my 20's, I enjoyed buying stuff for folks, but was starting to resent the commercialism. Now, I completely resent it when people in stores keep trying to shove crap down my throat when after I've already picked out what I want to buy. They don't understand the concept of "NO! I have what I want now BUGGER OFF!"

So, as you can see by my Icon, I'm in a Bah-humbug mood towards Christmast.

Of course, just to be contrary, I'm in a rather good mood and looking forward to spending Christmas with my family. Smile

Cheers

Very well said... I despise the commercialism as well, but the overall aura of the holiday is generally kept at my house, so it's really nice Smile

i have to say that i find it annoying that my usual lurking spot on the green is now SOOOO bright, thanx to the overambitous idoits accross the road from it (i swaer theyre competing to see who can waste the most amount of electricity over xmas) that i have to wear shades just to go near it. that pisses me off....

having said that, i do beleive that xmas is about a time of sharing and the coming together of a family.

but anyway. Merry xmas (or watever it is u celebrate) to you all!

I personally don't celebrate Christmas. Oh, & for the record, Chanukah is 8 days.

I've been living in Saudia City dude. A metropolis in the desert where time doesn't appear to exist. Laughing

My Christmas spirit has waned a bit from years past. I am not of a Christian/Catholic based faith, but I still love to celebrate the birth and life of Jesus Christ.

To answer your question, Scifer, if no one at all bothered with this holiday I wouldn't either. It is something that should be celebrated with others. I have more holiday plans than I know what to do with(a wonderful problem to have), it's gonna be great visiting my folks again. Not to mention the awesome dinner!

Merry Christmas/Holiday Scifer!! Smile

i don't bother with christmas, or...any religious holiday... but if anyone ever asks... i didn't say that...until people stop giving me stuff. what can i say.. greed can be an amazing motivator for actings as if you care about people who the rest of the year you really couldn't give a pile of radioactive waste about.
