1) Since PF has came back, on about a majority of my posts, I have been noticing an extraenous character popping up at the end. If I try to edit out the character and repost- the character returns.

I'm using Mac OS 9/Netscape 4 or 5 or 6, depending on th e time of day.

2) I'm noticing that when I go visit the hosted websites (including mine), the url sometimes pops up as:
planetfurry.com/user/[name of hosted site]

though my old bookmark links which have ../~[name of hosted site] still works.dds

Hmmm... interesting. I didn't quite notice it but it's true, the individual sites have planetfurry.com/user/[name of hosted site] as URL, but the old version still works.

Make it three things, I'd rather not create another thread for a tiny bug.

I just noticed Mike's forum is labeled "raccoon?s bookshelf" - looking at the raw HTML, the question mark is replaced by a "ยด", so I don't know if this is simply a local browser quirk or not.

Could you attach a screenshot containing the extraneous character you are talking about, Elfen? Has anyone else noticed this problem?

Concerning the strange character replacing ' and " characters, I am aware of this and am working on a fix. The problem is with the character encoding. If you view the page/source in Unicode (UTF-8), the "question mark" characters show up. If you view it in Western (ISO-8895-1), the characters show up as normal.

As far as the different user site URL's, I wasn't aware of the change in the new version, but I will go through my sources to make sure it isn't another issue. More than likely, the /user/username is now the master URL, and the /~username is just an alias/redirect. Personally, I think both ways are good. Both are a used standard, though the ~username is one I've seen more often.

My browser doesn't show a "?" but something else. (see screen shot)

That's the "?" character I'm talking about. Basically, it's an invalid character code for the specific encoding, so it will display the error character.

Also if you have time Whip could you edit my entry just a bit?

Now it is raccoon's bookshelf.

I would like it to be Raccoon's Bookshelf.

Thanks

Done.

It looks like it's a random set of characters that hit your posts. I'm wondering if it may be an issue with Safari... Have you tried any other browser? (Firefox, IE, etc.)

Is it possible for you to send me a tcpdump of what is happening when you post a message through Safari? Programs like Ethereal (specific ports for Mac OS X available here and here) will let you capture network packets, which I could then determine if the extra characters are coming from your browser or from some other source. I'm willing to bet it's coming from Safari, though.

If you need help running Ethereal, let me know and I'll walk you through setting up a simple capture.

That only happens on my home Mac, which is OS9 and Netscape.

I dont use IE (for obvious reasons).

Work machines which are OSX/Safari dont have this problem.n

I did see a few "?" characters at the end of a post.

I use Opera on Win98SE.

Which version of Netscape? Have you tried any other browsers on this machine? Did this start before or after the recent server downtime, or was the browser upgraded inbetween the time the server was down?

Just looked at Elfen's posts with IE 6.0 and it shows the same random characters as NS 7.1 does.
That's because the characters are being posted into the message and are in the database. Once posted, they will continue to display for anyone. The problem is, what is putting in the extra characters, and why?

Did you know that Concolor's Gone Wylde site is gone?

All it displays is the default PF place holder message.

Fixed. The default file (index.html) was not overwritten when I restored the files. index.htm was there, but index.html takes priority over index.htm for the webserver's default web page.

Okay, the default charset has been switched back to ISO-8859-1 (was UTF-8). I've tested a few pages that had "bad" characters, and they appear to look okay now.
