For those who don't puruse my LJ, I posted this notice on Sunday night:

"I got the news last Friday that all the tests show that I've got Type II diabetes; the good news is that it's treatable with oral medications but for those to be more effective, I'll have to make some dietary changes at the least. More as I know it. "

I'm taking the meds and checking my blood sugar; meanwhile I'm up for some more tests. The good news is that this is caught early, I get yearly physicals.

Dang. Sorry to hear about that. I hope that this isn't too life-shaking.

Don't know what this will do to your blood sugar, but maybe it'll boost your blood pressure. Wink

EDIT: I"m going to take a few clues out here - those who've read it, please don't give plot items away.

Thanks, Cirrel. <Looks to the reader> For those who are wondering, this is of a character who'll be introduced in the future of From The Wings and will become very important to one character in particular and to the plot in general. Her full name, when introduced, is Serina Starr and she's quite a femme!<turns back to writing>

Oh, and you'd best treat her well. She's had self-defence training since she was old enough to understand it and her dad's a colonel in an AUS combat branch.

It seems that in going through training on how to deal with Type II diabetes, and I am making lifestyle changes (reading nutritional labels is boring but quite informative; you'd be surprised on how the carb content of "low-fat" and "healthy" snackes varies little, for the most part, from regular snacks), they noticed a condition that may just be "normal" for me or it may be an early symptom of a problem. The specialist I was referred to can't tell for certain with an external check, so Friday, 5/21, I'm going into the hospital (Harris Hospital, just south of downtown Ft. Worth) for an angiogram on my left arm and hand. I'll be kept overnight to allow the sedative to wear off (don't want to drive while impaired) and return home the next day. Naturally, I am hoping that it's a benign condition that can be let be.

Best of luck to you. Yep. Know about the sedatives and driving. Not a good mix. Hope the night nurse is pretty,

Cirrel.

If anyone's been following this, you know that I went into the hospital for some tests on Friday. Prep took a couple hours and then the tests/x-rays took another couple hours; followed by six hours in the recovery room. They sent me home by taxi and I had to take the bus back the next day to retrieve my car.

The test was an "interesting experience"; I could definitely feel when they injected the dye into my artery. While I'll have to wait until Tuesday for definitive evaluations, the doctor conducting the tests said I appeared in good shape that way with the arteries of a 20-year-old. Which means, of course, that somewhere out there is a poor, probably much debauched, 20-year-old with my 50-year-old arteries; he,(less likely "she") has my sympathies.

On a related note, I had to spend six hours on my back in the recovery room before being allowed elsewhere. My sincere appreciation to Eric Flint and Andrew Dennis for 1634: The Galileo Affair as it was a great companion after they cranked the bed up so that I could read.

Okay, the final evaluations of the x-rays were that there were no circulation problems. That's goodness.

In other matters, in the rougly two months since I started the diet/exercise/medication regimes, I've gotten my blood sugar down to normal levels and I've managed to lose 10 pounds on the way.

Not a bad way to start.
