|

I wrote this for an English assignment, and hopefully the teacher won't be too disturbed by it. The assignment was (obviously) to write a poem about an everyday experience, so I chose something I'm forced to experiece at least half a dozen times each day. Sorry about the excess angst and all, but that's the only way I could get the abstract ideas into concrete form. Enjoy!
Only Human
By Matt Rogers
I glide through the corridor from class to class,
Making careful note of all the bodies in the hall.
They clog the way, talking of their dates, or their drugs,
Or whatever inane ideas have crossed their crass minds today.
I can’t help but wonder:
“Are they what will fill our future society?
Are they the real representatives of the human race?
Are we doomed to a destiny of this destruction?”
Storming through the hall, I feel
The blood brewing, boiling, burning my body.
Something takes over, something ferocious, feral,
And free from the human anchor.
A werewolf, the beast in me comes loose,
Fur, claws, tail, and all.
More than human? Less than human?
Or something much too different to compare?
My senses, my instincts—
All the things I have are all the things they lack.
The urge to shred the hopeless horror of humanity
Is harder to resist with each transformation.
I smell their addictions, and see their vanity.
I feel their bipedal wanderings strike me,
And hear the pollution of their minds.
Would it be wrong to sneak a little taste?
Then I look down and see my hand.
My flesh.
My fleeing freedom.
And I must grow to accept one single fact:
I am human, too.
Okay, so there aren't any prizes inside. But it made you look, didn't it? _________________ "This is fascinating. A whole tribe of people who prefer to interact as furry animals rather than human beings." -Gil Grissom

Ves Wolf it was a very good description of what you or any student would see and hear in the halls of a school. It took me back to the time I was in high school and what I saw and heard, keep up with your writing you're good at it.
Bright Blessing,
