I found this topic on another forum for a SecondLife group I'm a member of. I thought we might get a similar one going here.
For myself, I'll have to give it some thought first, there's a few I kinda like. We don't necessarily have to limit it to aircraft, do we? Maybe even consider aerospace craft (like the shuttle and its up-coming replacement designs)?
EDIT (5/24/07): Ok, for anyone trying to view that forum and it's not there, it has been removed, and the thread hasn't been migrated to the new site yet. _________________ "Cogito, ergo es. I think, therefore you is." Ray D. Tutto (King of the Moon) to Baron Munschaussen

Corporate Jet: Cessna Citation for smaller, Gulfstream IV for larger.
Miliary: Fighter: F-15, and the new F-22. Attack: A-10 and F-15E:
Trainer: T-38(duh), Bomber: B-2 (gotta love the black bat, and the resurrection of the flying wing.) tanker:KC-10, Transport: C-130, and the newer C-17 for larger cargo.
Classic: Aeronca Champ
Classic fighter: P-38
Classic bomber and attack: B-25
Classic transport C-47/DC-3.

Without doubt, I am a fan of the P-47 Thunderbolt. It was all about sheer, raw strength and power. Probably the ultimate American fighter-plane. Sure, there were better fighters in that era, though not very darned many. But, the P-47 was _special_. |

Thanks to Amiga for starting this thread. Too bad OBA beat me at my own verbosity game, though... <grins> Maybe I'll cut and paste a bit.
Ultrlight aircraft - I'm a big fur. What's an ultralight?
Light Aircraft - Piper (the old Piper) Comanche. Sleek, sexy, and quick.
Light Twin - Piper Cheyenne 400
Corporate - Kingair variants, especially the B-200
Corporate Jet - Gulfstream G-IV
Fighter - F-4 Phantom, follow the smoke to the pilot
Attack - A-10, Hogs rock
Trainer - T-38, gotta agree with the Tiger on that
Bomber - XB-70 Valkyrie... sexier than stiletto heels and really, really fast
Tanker - KC-135... filler up on the giddy-up
Transport - C-130, baby! There is no other!
Classic - upside down or right side up, it's a Champ
Classic fighter - P-51 Mustang... greatest pinup backdrop ever made
Classic bomber - B-36 Peacemaker
Classic attack - The B-25 with the nose cannon. It'll ruin your day...
Classic transport - gotta be the veteran Gooney Bird, the DC-3. Nobody builds airplanes like that any more!
And an addition: Classic airliner - can't be other than Connie, the Lockheed L-1049 Constellation. Although the Boeing 707-620 runs a close second.
That was fun!

Well folks, I'm not an airplane afficionado on nearly the same level as many of you, but when it comes to classic airplanes, I have an interest through history, so to say...
My favorites would have to be:
Ultrlight aircraft - I tend to like gliders in general, but I don't know if they count. Modern gliders with those reeeeeeally long wings are very elegant craft in my opinion
Light Aircraft - Mrrff...no clue
Light Twin - No real idea either...
Corporate - I guess I like the Gulfstreams in general...they look -classy- in a way.
Corporate Jet - See above
Fighter - I'm going to be terribly uninventive and go with the F-16 Fighting Falcon. In it's Danish rebuild. US pilots can't make heads or tails of the cockpit, admittedly, but the Danish pilots swear by it.
Attack - A-10. No question. Go Warthog. That's -power- on wings!
Trainer - T-38. Dunno why, but it's a cool looking li'l plane
Bomber - Russian made Tupulev Tu-95 (Nato codename Bear). This thing looks -gigantic-!!
Tanker - KC-135. I have no knowledge of planes, but I know if I had to refuel in the air, I'd like to come up behind something -big- and -steady- like this.
Transport - C-130. C'mon, stupid question, next one please.
Classic - Classic airplane above all others? My all-time, unquestionable uber-deluxe-favorite? De Haviland Mosquito. This is any aircraft designer's wet dream in my opinion. If you say 'multipurpose' this plane MUST be the first one to pop up in your mind. Nightfighter, light bomber, escort, recon, it did -all- of that and more.
Classic fighter - Pure fighter? Spitfire II. Even though the Spitfire IX was faster and had better turn and climb rates, the classic Spitfire II was the 'plane that changed history' more than -any- other.
Classic bomber - British made Avro Lancaster. For it's time, the lift of this thing was absolutely ridiculous! And at least one squadron used them as dive-bombers on certain missions. We're talking a four-engine heavy bomber here!
Classic attack - No comparison. The Soviet IL-IIM Shturmovik. These critters packed an obscene punch.*
Classic transport - Nazi German JU-52. 'Tante Ju' (Aunty Ju) as it was called by the germans themselves is probably the clumsiest looking transport ever made, and -damned- did it do it's job. If anyone sat down and read up on the history of this plane they'd know what I mean.
* It should be noted, for aircraft history fans, that IL-2M's were often 'sponsored'. They were cheap to produce and highly effective, and became the most produced aircraft -ever-, with over thirty six thousand produced. Many of it's most famous pilots were women, since the Soviet Union used female frontline soldiers during WWII, both on the ground and especially in the air. One particular little story which is attached to this plane and which can be found in several history books regarding combat aviation history, is that as these planes could be privately sponsored, a little girl who's father had commanded a Soviet IL-2 Regiment, but who had been shot down and killed by the Germans, scrimped and scraped a hundred rubles together. Then she the money to Stalin himself along with a letter asking him to please spend it on an IL-2 to avenge the death of her father. Needless to say, a hundred rubles was nothing close to what the cost of a Shturmovik was, at the time, but Stalin amazingly enough received the letter in person. Someone in his front office must have seen the potential propaganda value in it, and let it through to their boss's office. Shortly thereafter, the regiment which the little girl's father had commanded, received a brand new IL-2M with the inscription 'From Lenochka for Father' painted on the side.
Just a bit of aviation history trivia...sorry, can't help myself. |

A fur I know smacked my muzzle last night and reminded me that while the Cheyenne 400 is a nice toy, the real furs fly Beechcraft Dukes. I stand... or sit, humbly corrected.
The Duke is a sleek, sexy ride, fast and furious, but maintenance costs on those Lycoming engines are quite high. In fact, compared to the 400, maintenance on the Duke is... impressive. To say the least.
So if you've got money to burn (and what protagonist doesn't?), get a Duke and wow the crowd. Otherwise, the 400 will lift more, fly it almost as fast and a bit farther, on much less dollars per hour of operation.
Besides, Chuck Yeager once set a record for something or other with the 400. That's gotta mean something.
Apologies to Joe for my mistake.

I'm new to your forum but not new to the board....
OK, you asked so here it is.....
Favorites have to be the F4-D Phantom II 'the bent wing bug-sucker', OV-10 Bronco, A-10 Warthog and T-38 Talon.
Let's add the P-51D Mustang and the F-86 to that list.
Plus any prop driven bomber, too. Including the Russian Tupolev Tu-95 'Bear'
There are a lot of other good ones out there but these are my fav's

Ah another fan of the theory that if you have a big enough engine you can even make a lead brick fly. _________________ Beware the light at the end of the tunnel, just might be the headlights of my speeding truck. =0.0.=

Hmm .. throwing my hat in the ring..
Classic Fighter :
WW1 - Fokker Triplane .. for no other reason than the fact that it looks damned cool, plus it worked a lot better than most think it would (I've flown Balsa Replicas)
WW2 - Supermarine Spitfire .. The scrappiest little fighter that could be made relatively easily.
Ultralight : Gossamer (forget the second half) .. Human powered flight .. 'nough said.
Air Superiority vs Ground : A-10 Warthog .. thing packs a Vulcan Cannon in its nose, makes tanks into swiss cheese. Video of A-10 unleashing its CIWS weapon
Fighter : Give me something like the F-15, or F-22 .. something that can fight its way out of a bad situation.
Bomber : Stealth 'Fighter' and Stealth Bomber .. THey get the job done with minimal fuss.
Sneaky : Predator .. Non-manned, like the U2, but can be armed.
Gunship : AC-130 Spectre .. Packed a crap-load of guns, and then could pick stuff up.. Pic of one, with a GAU-4 20mm Vulcan automatic gun, Bofors L60 40mm cannon and the M102 105mm howitzer visible. _________________ Independent Business Owner ... Ask me, if interested in learning more.

I always thought that the ME262 (AFAIK the best German jet in WW2) was the coolest lookin plane ever. _________________ I'm a nut, but there are those who appreciate me for it. |
