In my rounds here on PF, I discovered Tommy Fox Stone is our post master with 8,366 posts under his belt.

I wonder how many of those were birthday wishes?

Kel

To make whiskey, you have to make "beer" first - the "mash" that is distilled into white dog. The white dog is then aged in barrels, turning it into whiskey.

The fumes coming off of that "beer" during fermentation has to be experienced to truly understand just how nasty it smells.

Quote:
You come here for a tour and you learn how the popular Tennessee whiskey is made. At the end of the tour, don’t expect a sample which you likely can experience at the bourbon distilleries in Kentucky. Lynchburg, the seat of Moore County, is dry. Baptists don’t have to worry about speaking to one another in liquor stores here. There aren’t any

So, it's nice to see how it's made but no tasting . . .

Years ago a book of folk knowledge was published, named The Foxfire Book. Then they did Foxfire 2, Foxfire 3, etc. One of the early books had a whole chapter on how to fix "corn squeezins", even how to get your sprouted corn ground for free from the local miller so there was no paper trail of your endeavor.

Of course you did your fermentation and distillation in the woods, far from the prying eye of the "revenuer". This could lead to some interesting situations. For example pigs love beer, but they lack the ability to purge if they get too much alcohol, and can die from too much drink. As most moonshiners would build their fermentation vats in the ground then cover then with boards and leaves, they might come back to find a dead pig floating in their mash. Some guys would fish the pig our and go ahead and distill the mash.

This prompted the saying that if one got a nasty batch of moonshine: "Tastes like a pig died in it."
