Marriott fined for blocking wi-fi at Nashville hotel
Fri, Oct 03 16:33 PM EDT

(Reuters) - Marriott International Inc will pay a fine of $600,000 to resolve a Federal Communications Commission probe into the blocking of guests' wi-fi networks at its Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee.

The investigation revealed that Marriott employees had disabled wi-fi networks established by consumers in the conference facilities, "while at the same time charging consumers, small businesses, and exhibitors as much as $1,000 per device to access Marriott's Wi-Fi network," the FCC said in a statement.

The interference and disabling of wi-fi networks was in violation of Sec.333 of the Communications Act, the FCC said.

The probe began after the FCC received a complaint from an individual in March 2013 alleging that the Gaylord Opryland was jamming mobile hotspots in the hotel.

"Consumers who purchase cellular data plans should be able to use them without fear that their personal internet connection will be blocked by their hotel or conference center," Travis LeBlanc, enforcement bureau chief, said in the statement.

The FCC ruling said Marriott has to stop the unlawful use of wi-fi blocking technology and file compliance and usage reports with the bureau every three months for three years.

Marriot said it believed that the Gaylord Opryland's actions were lawful and expected the FCC to make rules to end the confusion over this issue.

"Marriott has a strong interest in ensuring that when our guests use our wi-fi service, they will be protected from rogue wireless hotspots that can cause degraded service, insidious cyber-attacks and identity theft," the company said.

Who knows how many others have done or are doing this. Their stated justification sounds like just another way to pick the pockets of their guests.

I have never had a problem with my WiFi hotspot or internet connection being jammed at any hotel/motel/dive that I've ever stayed at.

Per the FCC's own rules and regulations, it is unlawful to jam a lawful communication unless you're an LEO with a signed warrant from a judge. Even then, you may still be put under the scrutiny of the FCC.

Looks like the Marriott Corp was looking to make a few bucks on the sly.

This is things they do to convention exhibitioners, not the common people.

If you went to something like E3, you'll see a ton of high tech booths with internet access on them. They pay out the nose for low end crap internet. It's no wonder people are starting to use 4G to bypass the hotels.

Update:

The FCC ruled it is illegal to block consumer WiFi. Image that.

The Marriott is still seeking a ruling that might be in their favor (and negate that $600K fine) regarding hotel/convention center network security. It's not likely the ruling would be in their favor, since FCC regulations clearly spell out the rules; No blocking unless you're an LEO with a warrant.

I can't wait for someone to jam their wi-fi that they charge for to screw them over... Of course, they'll scream bloody murder when it does happen.
