According to the news, Yahoo! was hacked and what was reported to be 1/2 million usernames and passwords were stolen and posted on the 'net, unencrypted (!).

If you have an account, go change your password now!

This has been an important service announcement from Kellan Meig'h.

Several news outlets are over-blowing the story a little bit. The issue is serious, but it isn't 1-2 million user accounts, it was around 453,000. The problem was with a database that stored the account information stored the passwords in plain text.

This database was used by users of Yahoo Voice and the Yahoo Contributor Network. It doesn't appear that this is the same database that Yahoo uses for other areas (Yahoo Mail, etc.), so even if you were to reset your password it may not affect this specific site.

Still, you may want to change your password just to be sure. As a best practice, never use the same password on multiple sites, and use strong password generation methods. Personally, I recommend services or software such as LastPass or KeyPass to keep track of your passwords in a secure manner.

Um, I guess I wasn't too clear on that.

1/2 million = one-half million.

I was kind of rounding up a bit.

They did try to play it off as not being the main area of their site but again, if that was unencrypted, then maybe . . .

Just sayin' ya know.

Confused

Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant. Smile Thanks for the initial post, though. The more people know about issues like this, the better. There have been an unusually high number of site compromises over the past couple of months. Linkedin, Last.fm, Yahoo, etc. Who's next? Neutral
