Finished "The Circle Series" books. Green, Black, Red, and White by Ted Dekker. Excellent story that coincides with his Lost Books Series.
Now reading the last of the Inheritance Series by Christopher Paolini. _________________ Ciara 12/26/08

The book on top of my TBR pile is Ysengrimus, translated by Jill Mann. From the introduction:
Quote: | The Ysengrimus is a Latin beast-epic of over six and a half thousand lines, written in the middle of the twelfth century. It has long been recognized as work of central importance in the study of medieval literature, in the first place because it is itself a literary work of the first rank, but also because its example and influence were decisive in the establishment of beast-literature as a major medieval genre. |
The collection of stories about the wolf Ysengrimus and the fox Reynard is the first appearance of those two, and the root of the many retellings in the centuries that followed.
The first 198 pages are an introduction and analysis, the remainder is the story in twelve "books". Medieval Latin on even pages, English on odd pages. I don't read Latin, and I skimmed/skipped the intro and analysis. Finished "Book One". So far... pretty cool. _________________

"And then there were None" by Agatha Cristie, circa 1939.
A novel set in England where a bunch of people from various walks of life are invited to a party on an isolated island. Shortly afterward they all start getting killed. Making matters worse, the only boat that makes rounds on and off the island stops showing up, isolating them from the mainland. They soon conclude that the eccentric rich guy who invited them all to the island is a madman intending to kill them all one by one, and that he's actually snuck in among them as one of the guests. So they become increasingly paranoid and distrustful of each other as they're killed one at a time. It was morbid and entertaining. |

There were some very cool aspects to this book, and I recognized a bunch of fairy tales that grew up out of this one. However it was talky. Waaay too damned talky. The wolf and fox talked and talked and talked at each other.
The intro told of how the fox's speech used a bunch of weird classic Latin verb forms, and that's why it's such a stinking difficult work to translate. With all the talky bits I wondered if it wasn't the 11th century version of Literary (with a capitol L). You know, that genre that is focused on beautiful sentence structure rather than story or characters.
Anyway, inter-library loan, so I had to give it back before I'd finished it. Bummer. Wanted to see the fox finally get the better of the wolf in the end. _________________
