Hi guys,

Found this little piece of fun on a Danish newspaper today. Two Danish pilots as part of a military exercise landing a C130 Hercules on the beach of the Danish west coast ... turning it around ... and promptly taking off again. Except the turn, which is played at twice the normal speed, all is in real time and with no silly background music to ruin the impression of power! Go have a look. The landing strip was 1300 metres long, but the plane is supposed to be able to land on a strip of only 950 meters. Still ... better safe than sorry, eh?

Rugged and versatile. If you can, catch the Hurricane Hunters show on the Weather Channel. Highlights how tough these birds are!

Joe and Steve would be quite impressed. I certainly am. I don't think any of us would have the nerve to do that on a beach in soCal or the Gulf Coast.

The sand of Vejers Strand must be pretty dense and tightly packed to take a heavy machine like a C-130. I once saw the aftermath of an incident where a guy tried to land a Cessna 140 (an old "tail-dragger" style, single-engine general-aviation aircraft) on the beach at Pismo and wound up with his tail high in the air and a Continental engine full of sand, prop and nosecone buried in the stuff. Not an undertaking to be taken lightly or without preparation, landing on a beach.

It was interesting to note that the port-side pilot appeared to have a small "Hero style" video camera mounted to the top of his headset, in addition to the camera mounted on the glareshield of the instrument panel in front of the pilots. I wonder where the video from that pilot's camera is? That would be interesting to see.

Thanks for sharing the link, Aslaug. Very cool.

Oh ... and you can see that landing strip on the sand in Google Earth. If it's that easily seen they must incorporate that area as part of their exercises on a regular basis. Pretty country ...
