Ya know, I had this problem recently.
My fix was to serve up a very nasty image via that .htaccess file. It took a few days but the linkers finally gave up.
Something about expecting a bunny with a pancake on its head and getting maggot-filled road kill deer instead . . .

Fixed ... again. Damn bots. More steps to prevent recurrence. Hopefully these steps will last a little bit longer ...
Thanks for visiting the web site, anyway, or attempting to at least. I appreciate the patronage.

After studying my logs, I began to deny access to those that were hammering my forum and gallery.
It's obvious when there's a "Register" function followed by "Login" repeatedly. I just deny that IP access and things quiet down for a bit.
Bots are the most annoying, though. If all else fails, just disallow all bots except google and yahoo. Even those two are somewhat invasive. Disallow access to your image files/folders to conserve bandwidth.

Know who one of the bigger offenders is?
Google
Specifically that portion of their whatever-they-are that does image searching. Say you search for "silver coyote" in Google images, and you find a picture of ... well, a silver coyote. When you click on that image thumbnail, you see the full size image ... plus in the background the entire page that image was found at.
Well, if that image was from ... say, a blog belonging to somefur who owns a camera and likes to run his mouth, that page might contain 30 or 40 other images, plus several pages of text. All sucked up and presented to the web surfer for the clicking of an image.
Turns out a considerable portion of my site's bandwidth consumption has been thanks to Google bots. Between that and the hot-linkers my site was shipping between one and two gigabytes a day. That's a lot for a little hobby site with nothing to sell and minimal following.
So we've taken steps to mitigate the hot-linkers and the bots. We'll run for a bit and see how it goes. If trouble persists I'm not above doing some site pruning, and may do a lot of that at the blog page anyway. Maybe the albums pages too ...
Anyway, back to RL.

It was good to see you making another post on the Range after so long. Things are undeniably hard on you and your family at the moment, but as always, my friend, you know where to go if you need to rant. You know you'll get an answer, and you know it will be sincere. |

I appreciate that, dear.
I don't know where I'd be without my amigos, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't smell too nice.

A slightly belated Merry Christmas to all out there at The Range, and a Happy Birthday to your dad. Sorry I've been out of touch, as well. RL stuff, as you well know, doesn't leave a lot of time these days. Until I speak with you again, Prospero Ano, mi amigo!

This should probably go in the new thread for 2012, 'cause it's almost half past midnight on 1 January as I type this. But whatever, Tigermark, I just wanted to thank you for your thoughts this holiday season.
Yeah ... RL ... 'nuff said. This year is gonna be better. It has to be.
Talk to you soon.

You didn't try some of that goodness in the 'poorly marked can'? It's very good with a bit of treacle on top!
A belated Happy New Year to you and yours.
