Isn't it basic strategy not to play to your oppoents strength?

Or to get them to play toward your own?

So, what would be the war equivalent of that drawing, sending hookers behind enemy lines?

I think you could say David lucked out with that one. While his opponent was a master chess player it looked like he couldn't multitask at all. I have to agree it is a valid strategy. After all, if Crager was a true chess master he should have been able to keep everything that was going on with the board in his head while oogling a drawing haha.

My take on the whole gaming thing is that this is training for war as opposed to sport. I don't know about you, but if I'm a ground-pounder or swabbie I want my commanding officer lying, cheating, and stealing every little chance he gets if it can help my side win or make the victory less costly. Indeed, the better he is at lying, cheating, and stealing as opposed to "fair" standup toe-to-toe fighting (the kind that gets me killed) the greater a hero he is in my book. War isn't fair, in other words, and generally people who try to clean it up and make it so merely prolong the agony and make things worse for everyone involved. Wars are wretched and horrible affairs, and in their more virulent forms are fought for _all_ the marbles. Coming in second with a clean conscience doesn't get you very far under these conditions.

That's not to say that I believe in total, unrestricted barbarism-- there _are_ rules which can and should be observed as long as both sides remain at least on the surface honorable, just as there are rules at this gaming session that both sides _do_ adhere to. (You'd be hard-pressed to persuade me to say good things about an officer who broke a battlefield truce called to collect the wounded, for example, even if doing so resulted in a victory.) However, _always_ give me the guy that lies, cheats and steals within the widest reasonable interpretation of these rules (and who is also fully capable of getting away with limited violations, especially if the other guy is cheating too) every time, when the Great Issues of the times are at stake.

In short, I'm a big fan of Winston Churchill (who would've used internationally-banned poison gas against a 1940 invasion) and William Tecumseh Sherman, who did more to end the American Civil War than any other man by forcing the civilian populace of the South to _actually suffer_ the privations of defeat rather than just talk about how willing they were to do so.

If war was fair, we wouldn't have fought a guerilla war against the well ordered formations of the British forces in the American Revolutionary War.

Let the games continue....

As for 'fixed' dice, it sure looks like it, but then again, I've had games where I couldn't buy a halfway-decent roll as well as games where almost everything went my way... (but the average roll also showed that too!)...

Thank you guys for still hanging in there and reading this!

For what it's worth, the next work in the series is progressing swiftly. I hope to finish it by late September, if not before.

Actually I just read it ^^
Interresting seams that a footbunny helps mister spy. Cool with the scentmark for David only he can now spot the "thief".
And personally I think the Yans are really sneaky.

Nice to see David doesn´t forget his little crew who helped him at the mast.
And the fast departure from the stadion was probably the best way. It got a bit out of control there
Keep it up ^^

The story of Midshipman is available as pdf from the bookshelf and I copied the file to a friend who asks why the background is shaded (gray).
On his e-reader this will diminsh the contrast.
Is there a B&W version of the pdf, or can I simply adjust the pdf?
