13 is correct she could pull 6 of the black for one hand and 6 of the of of the brown for the other hand so to be certain of getting at least one matching pair a thirteenth would have to be pulled. you're up mwalimu _________________ "Political Correctness is tyranny with manners." Charlton Heston

(Styx: If she can tell a left glove from a right in the dark she only needs to pick 8 (7 for one hand and 1 for the other) to be guaranteed of having a pair.)
A small child fell from a window of a 250-foot-tall building, but upon landing was not killed or seriously injured. How is that possible? _________________ mwalimu

He fell towards the inside of the building, from the window sill.

Actually that's not the answer I was looking for anyway, though it is sort of on the right track. _________________ mwalimu

I didn't say she could tell only that she could have pulled those and the only way to be certain of a matching pair is to pull 13. _________________ "Political Correctness is tyranny with manners." Charlton Heston

Correct. You're up!
Syrius's answer was a good try. Another good try that wasn't the answer I was looking for was that the 'small child' was actually a bird that could fly well enough for a soft landing. The question is often phrased to say "25-story building", but I altered the wording to forego another 'nice try' - Q: What building has a million stories? A: The library. _________________ mwalimu
