I hope the Mayans were wrong, too.

I think the uproar over the Mayan calendar is an elaborate, trans-generational joke perpetrated by a race that knew they'd be able to look down upon we poor wretches who now occupy the planet they once mastered. They must shake their heads, chuckling in glee, watching the lot of us run around, terrified, babbling dark predictions and dire warnings of everlasting misery, based on their calendar.

The truth probably is that they simply didn't see the need, from their perspective thousands of years ago, to document their calendar any farther into the future. It would be like us producing a written calendar that would allow any of us to say with confidence what day of the week it would be on 4 July 2525. What's the point? Isn't it enough that we know what day of the week it will be on 1 January 2000? (That would be a Saturday.)

Don't we all have better things to worry about, to occupy our minds with? <shrugs> I sure do. I don't have time to worry about 21 December 2012. Too much is happening right now for me to think about what might or might not happen eleven months hence, let alone work up a good worry about it.

I'm glad my friends are still here as we move forward. Thanks for hangin' with the old dog, guys.

SC

*clears throat*

Ahem ... historic rant-time. I will try to keep it reasonably brief.

The Mayans had two systems for measuring time. They are called the long count and the short count by modern day historians. The long count calendar, which is the one which is supposedly "running out", is divided into five intervals.

By this system, 0.0.0.0.1 is one three hundredth and sixty fifth of a year ... or one day. This was called 1 k'in by the Maya.

The calendar is a base-20/18 system, however, unlike our modern system of counting which is a base 10. This means that 1 winal, or 0.0.0.1.0 is not ten days but twenty.

Now it gets messy. 1 tun is the next step up. But this is a base 18 system. 0.0.1.0.0 is therefore 18 times 20 winal, each of which is 20 kin, meaning 360 days. This would be fairly close to one year, but it is, of course, not the last digit in the long count.

Let's go to the next one. 0.1.0.0.0 is called one k'atun. This is also a base-20 number, so 20 tun or 7,200 days (just under 20 years)makes up one k'atun.

Last step up, one full long count, is 1 b'ak'tun. This is made up of 20 k'atun and is therefore 144,000 days or 394.5 years or so (extra days for leap years not taken into consideration here). We are currently saying goodbye to the 13th b'ak'tun, which will end on the 21st of december 2012 as we probably all know. These 13 b'ak'tun count back to when the Maya believed the universe began, on the 11th of August 3114 BCE. So we are coming up on 13.0.0.0 by the Mayan reckoning of time. The 22nd of december will be 13.0.0.1, and Christmas eve this year will be 13.0.0.3.

There are finds of Mayan artefacts, speaking of the future as far as the 20th b'ak'tun ... which seems fairly pointless if the world was supposed to come to an end.

There are some good words for what the whole 2012 scare really is. Some of them include crackpottery, bollocks, nonsense, balloney and my own all time favorite ... horseshit.

Though the sadist that resides in the darkest recesses of my soul is looking forward to seeing walking around wearing dust and ash, throwing animal feces on themselves in an attempt to show how sorry they are for all kinds of perceived sins and wrongdoings, only to wake up on December 22nd 2012 and the world will still be there.

I always got a kick out 'world's going to end' postulations. Mostly because people like to think it will end on a specific hour of a specific day. This leads me to imagining the planet going to crap one 'orange slice' at a time as it hits each time zone. Rolling Eyes

And Aslaug's right. The Mayans never said the world will end. They never even said the calendar runs out. It simply rolls over. Saying the world is going to end because of this is like saying the world will end December 31 any given year because that's when the calender on your wall runs out. Or that the world will end at 11:59pm because that's when your clock rolls over.

More entertaining that this, however, is how the people freaking out about it are predominantly neither Mayan decent or even of the Mayan religion. Pointing this out to them is hilarious as their brain tries to process that particular logic bomb. Laughing

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all, SC. May his flight be swift and safe, and his escorts have wings of eagles.

I am at a loss for words.

But I am here if you need someone to talk to.

I'm so very sorry for your loss, my friend.

I'll offer up our condolences. Although I never met your father, he must have been a great man.

You have my number if you need to talk.

First time checking in here in almost two months. It's been kind of rough, but The Fox and I are doing what we can to keep it together.

My mom is dealing with this better than I thought she would, and I'm not so sure the same might be said for me. But we're moving forward, and when she's ready we'll stop fooling around and celebrate the life instead of mourning the loss.

Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts. I wish I had it together enough to thank you in some better way. For once in my life, words fail me. Maybe that's a good thing at this point.
