*laughs* Oh, yeah, they're in for quite a ride. IMHO, it does help greatly if you get good CAD software. So, what software are they going with?

On the other hand, the software and equipment are getting better and better. The latest iteration of CATIA, like Pro-E and several others, can now be run on a high-end pc instead of requiring a dedicated workstation; though, I'll grant you, a central server is still necessary for storage and inter-connecting purposes. 'Tis a far cry from the CAD system I first started on, over a quarter-century ago. *That* was a very early version of Unigraphics, the central processor was a PDP 1170 that supported 10 terminals, all of which were Tektronics storage tubes that required refreshing every few actions. This generally took a while with complicated models. 'Tis much easier today.

*snicker*

They're going with MicroStation and BIM. I've never worked with CATIA or ProE, so I can't say as far as those two are concerned, but I prefer MicroStation over any other CAD s/w I have worked with. I work at an Architectural/Engineering/Construction (AEC) firm. Unfortunately, the architects are rather firmly in the driver's seat with IT trying to push it's way in to replace them. Neither of whom has the least idea of how to do the conversion effectively.

Having been in the position before, and more than once, I could take a large hand in doing this. However, the office politics is horrendous, and I very actively avoid involving myself in such. Plus, a significant number of folks, especially in IT, have a strong emotional attachment to the legacy tweaks they've made and they fight tooth and nail to keep their 'pets' in place, even though they're completely outmoded, and in a couple of cases, actually hinder production. So, I've backed away and I'm keeping a fairly low profile. One of the IT 'gurus' is aware of me and is including me in the process as far as the discipline I'm working in here (mechanical/hvac).

I'm working my way into an hvac designer position. I have also been an electrical designer (industrial plants) and a mechanical (machine) designer. Plus all-around CAD mule and designated CAD 'guru in the corner'.

I'm going to rather enjoy sitting back and watching these folks get a practical education. Razz The only drawback is I'm going to be in the middle of it. You probably would understand the types of silly and stupid glitches that are showing up.

Well, I'm running late for work so I'd better hit the road.

Nicolai

OK, I vowed to honor the wishes of those members that do not want me here and never post again, but a long time friend asked this of me so I feel Cateagle's wishes are more important.

The following is an excerpt from an email I received today.

Quote:
I find myself looking for work again and facing moving from Connecticut to somewhere, either back to Fort Worth or on to a new job if one comes up quick enough. As to what happened, my contract was chancelled because Sikorsky's bureaucracy managed to loose my access to a main tool for doing my job and couldn't get their act together to restore it; since I couldn't properly accomplish the job I was supposed to do, the contract was cancelled on 2/1/11. I'm feeling less than charitable toward certain portions of SIkorsky at the moment. Other than that, we're mostly doing okay. You can feel free to post this information about me to PF.
