They don't expect the forum goers to actually click on the links or even buy their crap.
It's called 'Search site optimisaion' in polite terms.
They just want Google and other search engines to rank their pages higher whenever someone searches for keywords used in the spam posts.
Some newer forum SW allows the option of automatically add an 'DO NOT FOLLOW' tag to all links that will make search bots ignore it, but untill more foums implement that, this crap will continue.
Also PHPBB3(which has been out for an age and a half now) have options for better CAPTCHAs, custom profile fields that the new user must fill in and a few other bits to make the life of those bots so much harder.
Unverified users doesn't show up in the users list, either, on PHPBB3.
(Which stops them from just generating users with links to 'homepages' selling blue pills) _________________ "My name's Lion, Anthony Lion"

Thanks Anthony, I wasn't aware of the google-rank-lifting thing via this, or the use of no-follow tags.
Did you ever hear about people being employed to read captcha's? If that's true, in a very very low wage country it could still be profitable.
Do you think it's true that defeating captcha's would be useless (for phpBB) as soon as the don't-follow tags are generated?
(...blue pills, I bet Pfitzer is having a really great time trying to explain to some customers that the active ingredient isn't in their 'product' ) |

Not completely useless, but...
The main attraction for them is to spread the links to a lot of sites in a short amount of time.
With a 'nofollow' tag, the links will only be noticed by those who frequent those forums, and that means they have to do at least some 'target optimisation' to make the links more attractive to the forumgoers.
After all, on most forums, their posts lasts only a short time, so they need to entice as many idiots as posible before the admins delete their posts.
Targetting such small usergroups takes a lot of work for very little gain.
(Only 2 - 3% ever click the links, and less than a tenth of those again, are stupid enough to buy anything. )
And yes, the rumours of people being hired to break captchas is true.
And some bots now have a good successs at automatically cracking captchas, too.
For these we need other methods.
Adding custom fields that must be filled in with a correct answer, looking at 'referrer codes'(the page that sent the browser to that page) to see if the browser just visited the previous page in the registration sequence, measuring the time it takes the user to read and fill in the registration form... _________________ "My name's Lion, Anthony Lion"

Maybe new member registrations should manually approved by admins or mods before posts are allowed. _________________ "Political Correctness is tyranny with manners." Charlton Heston

I'm glad this place is quiet in that sense.
Thanks to our administrator(s) it appears!
I know this isn't a discussion thread, but I'm asking anyway
...is there some obvious explanation why FA isn't hugely infected with these kinds of things? |

The site in question was www pestcontrol247 co uk
(Add dots if you want to see the site.)
PFers in the UK can call 0800 505 3259 to annoy the owners of the site.
Only call after midnight, though. Is that a premium number? If so, call BT and report spamming and 'suspicious business activities')
Start calling... _________________ "My name's Lion, Anthony Lion"
