I'm a long time fan of Tekken. An enormous fan to boot.
Tekken was always a gem in my eyes until Tekken 4 came along, I was horrified at Tekken 4's incredible crap factor. When Tekken 5 came out it rectified everything, it gave me hope that no Tekken would ever again be so utterly disappointing like four was. That hope was crushed today.
Tekken 6 swelled in my mind for at least two months, a new Tekken! It would have new characters, new moves and new stories to tell. I was peeing myself with excitement, well, not really, but it was close! I was so looking forward to this new masterpiece, thinking it would be Tekken 5 only bigger and better! The best Tekken ever!
I was so very wrong.
The first thing I noticed was that the arcade mode had no story at all. It was fun but it felt empty without at least an ending sequence. Then I noticed that some of my characters were missing several moves! Raven especially got the shaft in 6.
Then I noticed that some of the coolest features of five's customization were gone. What happened to King's horns!?
As I continued to play around, the controls felt stiffer than five and the walled rings felt far to small. I noted that the characters lost a lot of the realism they had in five as well.
I've never been big on the Tekken force style side game, it's a cool feature, but it's not for me. I prefer the fighting game aspect, heck, it's supposed to be a fighter! So I was enraged to find out that you absolutely have to play the scenario mode to see any story! What BS is that? Is this a fighter or an action adventure? What the hell were they thinking? Where was the masterfully crafted story mode that Tekken 5 had? Well...
I discovered the Arena. This mode seemed, at first, to be what I wanted-ish. It was story mode! Yup, intro scenes and an ending. Just one big fat major enormous flailing flaw, THERE ARE ONLY FOUR FREAKING FIGHTS!!!!!!
So, on top of having to play the grueling and unnecessary scenario mode to unlock the characters for arena, the damn thing is only four fights long anyhow. What a rip off!
Needless to re-iterate, I was kicked in the nuts by Namco. This is an even bigger disappointment than Tekken 4 was, because it promised so much more.
On the plus side, the versus mode is still awesome with a friend, and unlike Tekken 4, you can still jump backwards.
But in a nutshell, they failed. This is a big pile of fail.
Out of a score of 100 points, this is how it rates-
Bad scenario mode -10
Required to play aforementioned scenario mode -10
Moves missing entirely from characters -10
Story arcade mode only four fights long -10
End boss not playable -10
Slightly lesser character graphics than last game -10
Tiny walled rings -10
Hard to navigate menu screens -10
Missing custom items from Tekken 5 -10
Still fun in VS. mode with a friend +10
Overall, this game only gets a 20 out of 100. Sad, considering I gave Tekken five a 90. (T5 lost ten points because the end boss was unplayable) _________________ AKA Skoon
