There's also a new Google voice mail phishing attack that's just ramped up in the last day or two. It looks something like this:
If you get one of these, don't trust it! See http://lauren.vortex.com/archive/000709.html for more details. _________________ mwalimu

I'm getting alot of those in my hotmail and Yahoo spamboxes, but my Forum and Furry GMail accounts have no spam, which says to me that spambots target email addresses they can see. _________________ TGLucario - Scouse About!

Yeah, might as well reiterate my rules of thumb here - if you get any email like that:
1. Always assume it's a phishing email first.
2. If you want to check, then go to the site MANUALLY, as in open a browser and type the URL in yourself - do not ever click the link in the email.
3. As mwalimu pointed out, you can usually see in the URL of the link that it's going to someplace that is not Google, or UPS or PayPal, etc.
Stay safe and virus free! _________________ Changed my name to Kantaro. |

Microsoft Security Essentials is decent....I wouldn't rely on it alone but it's caught some things that my other AV program had not... _________________ "It's kind of like if you combined The Wizard of Oz and Reign of Fire...and Jonathan Livingston Seagull."

On Thursday my laptop was hit by a virus which rendered it unusable.
I lacked anti-virus software for three months, and I tried my best to avoid anything bad happening to my computer. But my laptop was hit.
So, I got my computer back from the Geek Squad today, and new anti-virus software. Here's to hoping it wont happen again. _________________ I'm called Steven, but it's not my first name!

I have a friend that keeps getting hammered by malware/spyware/trojans/etc. You name it, I've been 'asked' by him to disinfect/purge the problem, gratis.
As I like to say, "Ya know where you've been so don't go there again!"
Unfortunately, he will not heed this. . . Just recently lost his Yahoo! account to a hacker that no doubt got the password from a keylogger I recently cleaned off. Still hasn't convinced "Yahoo! to help him out in returning his account to his control.
The real bad part is the fact that his computer has a very comprehensive freeware protection suite on it but him and his roomie turn off the stuff to surf pr0n.
Keep your stuff updated and please use a protection suite, not just an antivirus and the windows firewall. That's not enough anymore. Window$ has too many holes in it as of Window$ 7.
Just my 0.02 USD worth. Your mileage may vary.

As I like to remind everyone;
1. NEVER EVER use an Admin account for ANYTHING but installing SW or other 'admin' jobs. Surfing is NOT a good idea when you have administrative privileges on your PC.
2. FireWall, not just a fancy word, but also a darn good idea. I don@t care what ComAss or other ISPs say, you REALLY WANT ONE between your PC and your DSL/Cable modem.
3. Unless you have a darn good reason otherwise, uPnP should not just be disabled, but the inventor should be taken out in the back yard and introduced to a lead pipe... repeatedly...
4. Downloading anything that's not from a trusted side is worse than russian roulette.(There's only one bullet in the revolver... ) And no, that online M3Ga HaxX0R you 'met' online doesn't count as 'trusted'. Neither does any Torrent you found on 'The site with a ship in their logo'...
5. Using the same password on more than one site is REALLY asking for it. And if those sites also uses your email as 'login name', you're hosed... _________________ "My name's Lion, Anthony Lion"

Something you'll want to keep in mind, if you use a broadband router you do not need a software firewall is unneeded and can cause problems if not properly configured and the default settings would not be the proper configuration to function as a redundant fire wall. _________________ "Political Correctness is tyranny with manners." 2. I've got no firewall or anti-virus and never really had one on my PC/Laptop for a good few years, mainly due to the lag on the PC, but on my laptop it's just actually being bothered to get one.
4. I only tend to download stuff I know can be trusted and if it's on Download.com, but via torrent for the awesomeness of illegal.
5. That's got my name over that for sure, but mainly because I don't like having to remember ONE password for one forum and NOBODY knows the email address that each forum account is linked to, other than admins who can check in adminCP.
So basically I'm a walking target, but yet I've been virus-free for a good few years! _________________ TGLucario - Scouse About!

So, make variations of the password?
Add a letter or two from the site name or something to a 'standard' password.
There's a lot of 'social networking' sites, internet stores and whatnot that uses email addys as usernames. And some of these DO store creditcard information, or 'in site' credits or other 'valuables' of some sort in your account data.
If someone manages to breach just ONE of those sites, and steal your login information, what's to say he won't run an automated script to attempt logging onto a thousand different sites, just on the off-chance that you've used those credentials somewhere else?
And if he gets into your email account, what's to stop him from running a script that feeds YOUR email addy to the 'forgot password' dialog on a thousand different sites?
(He'll only get replies from the sites you have an account on, but on those sites he WILL be able to take over your account.) _________________ "My name's Lion, Anthony Lion"

I do have a variation of the password I use, but it's only in case of emergencies that I change it to that. As for the email, all forums are linked to one email address, which is NEVER checked as it's full of thread reply notifications.
My furry sites are linked to another one, but I get a notification of an email within a minute, so I'm quickly in there and the others I just scatter around between 2 other email sites. One I hardly check due to the porn/spam I get in the spam-area and the other is mainly for Second Life. _________________ TGLucario - Scouse About!
