I just wanted some synopsis on this one, because I'm am really board and have just about given up hope of ever seeing a decent Obsolete Elder Scrolls killing, Not so Final Fantasy bashing, better than Kotor, upcoming new RPG's.

putting aside my substantially biased ranting aside, I wanted to discuss one of my favorite genera of video games

I thought we might discuss some of the fun points of the genera. whats the best one thus made so far, and why you guys think we should all agree? what was right with the second best, and what would make it so much better?

It can be hard to decide partly because "RPG" encompasses a lot of different genres. Probably my favorite is Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It's a 3D real time action RPG, but it's still an RPG; just not a more traditional turn-based RPG.

Lost Odyssey.

It's like Final Fantasy on crack, Red Bull and steroids.

Grandia and Panzer Dragoon Saga battle systems DESTROY Final Fantasy's, too.

Xenosaga 1 and 3 are also interesting.

Also, Demon Souls for the PS3 is all the rage in the west. It's an action RPG, a sleeper hit that keeps on being addictive.

I'd wait a while before getting it. It's riddled with bugs. For one thing on half the people who buy it they're caught by the load screen freeze. I can't even start a new game because i'm caught at the load screen. I know it isn't frozen because the music keeps playing but for some reason it just wont continue on. I'm stuck. Bioware says I have to wait for the first patch before I can begin to play it.

Patch not due out till summer.

I've really enjoyed Zelda as well. However, some would argue that it's not a 'true' RPG because it doesn't deal with stats, levelling, etc.

Pen & Paper Dungeons & Dragons gets my vote. Smile

CHRONO TRIGGER!!!

You can only understand it's magic once you've played it. I recommend the Snes or Nintendo DS versions, stay far away from the PSX one.

Just sank into the swirling vortex called 'Mass Effect 1.'

This. Is. Fantastic.

I love the deep, rich characters, galaxy, and storytelling. I got lost for hours just talking to characters and reading the complex histories of the different races and technology in the game.

It's not just a game where you go in with guns blazing and you win every time--in fact, if that's your playing style, you'll die quickly and you'll die often. Strategic use of cover, teammates, and abilities are what make or break a battle in this game--this, in my book, moves Mass Effect out of the FPS realm and more into an RPG realm.

Add in the fact that a point-based skill system truly allows you to map out your character's advancement, and I'd say that this game truly deserves the RPG label.

As a life-long RPG player, I've been around that block many, many times, and it takes a great deal to impress me in this genre. I am impressed.

If you love the first one then you'll deffinitly love the second one. They toned down the leveling but they added more to the tactics of the game without over encumbering it. THey also allow all classes to hack terminals and break into safes and doors. I also like the way they diversified the character classes. Each one now has it's own unique skills AND weapons. your no longer stuck with just 4 different weapons for all of them. Then there's the point skill system. This time when you max out one skill you get to choose between one of two premium skills to use. These also affect how you play. You also rely more on your squad members for support so you have to consider them when looking at a mission or mini-mission (Side quest).

speaking of side quests. Bioware was through. Ever quest and side quest (And yes I do mean every single one) you did in ME1 is at least touched up upon in ME2. Some of the side quests even have a direct effect in ME2 depending on how you handled said side mission.
