I actually had a dream once that upon falling asleep, my mind booted into Vista. It then blue-screened. I was thinking "If your mind gets a blue screen, do you have to kill it?" when I woke up.
That's why I dual-boot with Linux. _________________ My FA |

To tell the truth I haven't had any problems to speak of that were caused by windows since they released ME. Any problems I had were all resolved with elimenating resource hogware or by replacing faulty hardware. You'd be surprised how many problems are caused by cheap low budget components like motherboards, memory or hard drives Never ever use fujitsu or samsung drives. During the time I spent working for Compusa and one of those .COM places they have the highest failure rates. _________________ "Political Correctness is tyranny with manners." Charlton Heston

Quoted for truth.
Even Windows 98 will run decently after you get rid of crappy hardware and even worse drivers. And add two or three things to the system.ini.
Same with XP or 2K. If you're srewing up the NT kernal, you are the problem. Get decent hardware, and get rid of the crapware on your system, and you shouldn't have much problems.
Windows isn't perfect, and there are alot of little things that annoy me about it, but it isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be. |

I have to comment I've had the opposite. A crappy computer that ran perfectly on 2000, but would always crash in 98. By the way, the picture was meant to spoof HAL, as having him experience a RROD, or a 360 suddenly behaving like he did in the movie. _________________ Hey, Sony... IT'S PAYBACK TIME!

Perhaps. But by today's standards CP/M has the functionality of a brick.
The Windows NT family (includes 2000, 2003 {server only}, XP, and 2008) have a kernel. The Windows 9x family does not. NT has always been more stable than 9x.
Now if you install something that replaces a key DLL with a modified DLL, you can get into trouble. And buggy drivers that reside inside the kernel are never a good thing. As several mentioned, weak hardware is always a problem.
But it's darn rare for a bad app to hurt NT.

You people do realize that they fixed the red ring of death problem, right? Older models might still have the problem but the newer once got better power supplies.
Say what you want, once they worked out the kinks hardware by Microsoft has always been working very well. The Sidewinder Force Feedback II was the best joystick I ever had and I never regretted the purchase of either of my Xboxes.
And regarding Windows... I always found it amazing how well it ran, considering the endless possible combination of hardware out there. I do consider MacOS a vastly better operating system, but at least part of that is because they know exactly what hardware it will run on. Vista was terrible, I think we all agree there. The ideas they had were by no means bad, it just was rushed out unfinished. But from what I heard Windows 7 runs very well, and it is only in Beta. That promises good things. _________________ Tygon Panthera - name and species

My brother's 360 died two weeks out of the box. Brand new. Well-taken care of and never used for marathonic sessions. First, video issue. Once it was repaired (we checked the serial and it was the same unit), RROD.
Yeah, it works fine now. But for how long? _________________ Hey, Sony... IT'S PAYBACK TIME!

You must be an oracle. You speak the truth.
Microsoft has recently admitted they have a development culture that's based more on random activity than on computer science--so it's a wonder that anything as complex as Windows works at all. They said they've been pushing hard to change things. Trying to support every single piece of hardware ever developed has got to add to the confusion. And then there's the seriously antiquated EISA model that PCs still use.
