No offense taken; I've seen it too, and had people try to do it to me. I agree; it's an ugly thing indeed.

Just found Chris under
Recommended Anthropomorphic Other Literary Work
as one of the candidates for the ursa award.
So vote for Chris when you can.

I don't think you can vote yet until after the beginning of the year. There may be a link to register to vote, however.

As I noted in my original post, " fans of pornography are more willing to pay for viewing content..."

So the ability to get people to pay for something is not a useful measure of the value or quality of the product, often it is only a measure of how hard it is to steal.

There are three issues that I see. First, would making SOTS explicit really make it more popular and actually bring in award nominations? Second, even if this were true, would the current readership be turned on or turned off by such a change? And finally, is Chris the type of person who would want to write such, even if he was assured of increased popularity and minimal fallout from current readers?

I appreciate your point of view and the experience of the publishers you mentioned. But I am not convinced that crossing the line would make SOTS more popular. I strongly suspect that it would have a lot of negative reaction from current readers if it did change. And most importantly, I don't think that Chris would be happy writing such, which is the most important factor of all.

<snip>

Rather than telling an author what he should be writing, we should be supporting his efforts and encouraging him, while trying to bring in new readers who may not be aware of this wonderful story in progress.

<snip>

There is more to writing than can ever be put into any type of raw numbers, whether they be readership, profit, awards, etc. As fans, we have the right to "vote with our feet". If we don't like a story, we're not required to finish it. And if we enjoy a story, we are entitled to spread the word. But one right we fans don't ever have, is to tell an author what he should be writing.

This is such a fantastic essay on the subject I just had to comment and say so. Thank you, 007!

SOtS and ZigZag are what pulled me into the fandom. Reading Chris' work was like waking up from a muddled dream to find that my real home was in Toyland. I'd not been so captivated by a story in a long, long time. He and James Bruner introduced me to furry LITERATURE, and there I firmly stand.

Both of these excellent writers have figured out how to craft a compelling tale without making spooge the centerpiece. This is not to say that sex isn't handled where appropriate to the development of the plot. But it isn't THE plot. And they ever deal with it tastefully ... or comically.

Chris' work is what prompted me to start writing. I strive to adhere to the same high standards of taste, and I DO NOT CARE about the opinions of those who want details as to what goes on behind Wendy's bedroom door. There is plenty of spooge available without my adding to the overburden. Frankly, I'd write (which amounts to little more than taking Wendy's dictation, as often than not) whether anyone read it or not. That a few others find the tale engaging pleases me ... but it isn't why I do it. I think that holds true for Chris as well.

Chris ... carry on. You're an award-winner in my book.

Thanks, that answers my question Smile

As to a winner, it just has to be Chris's excellent writing.

Same here, Amiga led me to Eric Schwartz, his comic led me to SOtS/ZigZag and that led me to others. I still consider myself only partially in the furry fandom

My story is much like AmigaDragon's, except that I found Eric's wonderful strip through some sort of random search that I don't remember. That lead me to SOtS and ZZtS, thence onward to RBS and PF. And other sites.

Today I count myself as a furry, and I have tried my hand at writing. I'm still writing, as much for myself as anyone. My characters expect me to write what they tell me, and I do. If others enjoy what I write, that's wonderful, although durned few of them tell me. I accept that, too.

While I have written a couple of extra chapters, that might count as "classy spooge", I won't post those. There's no point in asking, so please don't. One of my characters asked me to write them, and I did. I have no desire to see them posted, nor does the character. And no, I won't tell you who.

Chris, keep up the wonderful writing. You and Racky give me a goal to strive for, although I know I'll never match either of you.

I started out pretty much the same as Mike I came across pics of Zig some of them by EWS, then found the Bolt Hole, which led me to ZZts which led on to SOLts. Only after I started reading the SOLts did I find EWS's strips. I like the strips they're light harted and funny but I was hooked on the stories the characters became almost real for me (I was depressed for a week after reading the dreaded Tabitha ch 6). I too was inspired to write by these stories and did a short fan fic for ZZts and a five chapter short story for SOLts centered on Clarence & Cindy those two have taken on a life of their own as several other furs have done spin off stories on them. As for spooge stories I like em, hey I'm a furvert I admit it so I wouldn't have minded some action in Chrs' & James' work but the fact that it's not there in no way detracts from my enjoyment of them.

My 0.02 USD worth-

I came on the scene via Identity Crisis. It lead me to ZZTS, RBS and PF. I have never looked back since.

As far as spoo in a story, I can write forever without having a graphic spooge scene in a story. It's not needed to write a good compelling story.

My muse has recently given me a story idea that I am still trying to strip the spoo from because I believe there is a good story underneath the goopy stuff.

The sordid, spoo-laden version will most likely end up somewhere else, not on RBS or PF or even my personal site. It's actually a good read, even leaving out the spoo.

Sorry for rambling on, gang. SOTS is a very good, well developed story that deserves an award. You can bet I'll vote for him.

Kel

I agree completely, Mike-

Some of the stuff I came across on the 'net was just drivel covered in spoo but occasionally, I came across one that, ignoring the messy stuff, it was actually a good story. It just felt tedious to me at times, picking around the parts I didn't want to read. That's why I'm trying to fix that one story, to make it suitable for the bookshelf or some other clean venue.

I would like to point out that there is a huge difference between an artfully done, intimate scene between two sentient beings that love one another and a spoo scene. A whole scene can be done without mentioning all the bits and bobs needed to do the scene. Exclamation

Kel

You have to know who your audience is, then have an appropriate balance between plot and sex to write a decent intimate story. If you have too much of one or the other, your fans will either be disappointed because you trashed the story up or will be upset that you hardly referred to the sex and that the plot dragged on for too long.

Same goes for the author; if the author is only interested in writing explicit sex scenes and doesn't have a story to be emotionally invested in, he'll lose interest easily. Take me for an example; I've been trying for about three years to write a story like that, but I keep losing interest. Finally, a couple weeks ago I finally realized "I want to do more with these characters; why don't I?" It'll be a while before I can really get started on writing a story that's fit to be seen, but I'll get into it a lot more. Plus writing the racy parts will be more fun because I'll be more emotionally involved in the lives of the characters (though they'll only be available for viewing to a select audience of favourites Wink).

I first came across Cris's story was while surfing around for furry comics. Low and behold I came across Sabrina Online and recognized Zig Zag from several comic books that I read (Yes I still read them.) And a few minutes with google and I was reading James's story which led me to Cris's story. Which led me to here .

I once was told that if the story is just as good with out the sex as it is with the sex, then it doesn't need it. The only reason it's there is because the author wants it in the story. A couple examples would be Fate also smiles by Wirewolf in which he has two versions one clean, one adult. And Omaha the Cat Dancer by Reed Waller and Kate Worley.

And a perfect example would be our very own SC's Annie & Joe. http://thesilvercoyote.net/stories/AnnieAndJoe.htm

There are times when I want a story with a more adult theme and times that I don't. Other wise I wouldn't be a member of this sites Darker side. Wink But Cris's story is just fine the way it is. And I'll will be watching the Ursa site for when I can vote for it. So keep up the good work Cris and Racky

Fingers crossed then Very Happy

Second, I think that classifying the majority of readers of SOTS as young males is also inaccurate. There are a good number of middle-aged readers out there. Not even the author can be classified as a "young male"! (Sorry about that Chris.)

Thanks for the heads-up, Tobi!

Sorry I've been absent. Apart from the myriad of things here, I've had an aversion to the direction this thread took in the early weeks of it. I think I still owe a counterpoint to Rabbit's original brief, even though it's water under the dam, as Ted Kennedy would say.

So I'm playing catch-up here.
