Stuff like that happens in areas where you rarely get snow, or it comes when unexpected. I doubt anything short of studs or chains would do much good. Who drives with chains when they don't need them? And studs are illegal in areas that don't get a lot of snow and ice.

That second car that was totally sideways in the road and accelerating kinda proves it has nothing to do with slamming on the brakes or driving technique. Ice is ice. I think the route was downhill. The only way to avoid a problem is to not go there. I've been in bad conditions, but nothing like that.

Now this video is about stupidity in snowy conditions. I can think of at least two things they did that were obviously stupid and one thing that was wasn't obvious and may not be their fault (a gross design stupidity), but I wasn't there so I didn't see where they attached the tow strap.
