A man can only be so blessed but so much, just when it seemed that my day was going down the tubes, something nice happens.

We all know my daughter, who is here as Very_Itchy_Fur, and seems to be rather vocal about it. And who knows how many others out there may have inherited my genetic make up, but in the least I have 1 who has not.

Along with my child(ren), I have many god-children who I personally consider of my own, and help raise when ever needed. Right now, one who is rather close to me is celebrating his 16 birthday; he's the son of my ex-from-heaven: Devin. In the past I have done my best for them, and continue to do so as needed and called upon. I was there for her when he was still in her womb, did as requested when she needed to take leave to give birth, and for the first several years of his life, was there for the both of them even when somebody else should have.

This has been a hard year for him though, loss of his grandmother, and need of extensive dental work that is giving him pain everyday. But he has endured, continued to be strong, and will one day be a man- perhaps take up after his god-father and be a man amoung men.

Though I wont be able to see him during the several days, I will be spending a day with him before my chemo treatment comes on the 15th; along with his mother. Seeing him grow up has made me proud of what little I did to help him and her out had produced a fine young lad in a place where boys of his age and race ends up in gangs, jails or in a grave.

Also in talking with my Ex-From-Heaven, she had ran into many of our former students from the 80's and 90's. Nearly all are successful college grads with carreers and families of their own. Both she and I had never given upon a child and did what we had to do for them when their own parents could not: including clothing and feeding some of them. Yes, we had found programs (back then, which maybe defunct now) that would provide the neccessary materials for poor families would not do without.

I sorta understood the slight anger in her voice, when she spoke of some of the girls who are already mothers in their mid20's, but I had to remind her that some of these very same girls were becoming mothers at 16, 17, 18... and that without our help, they would not have graduated highschool, go through college and have carreers of their owns- even though the fathers themselves are not there (dead, in jail, or abandoned them). These young ladies are no longer part of some government statistical chart on some office wall somewhere- they have beaten the odds.

The boys have grown up into fine young men, also college grads, carreer driven, and blessed fathers in some cases. Despite the pressure of gangs and drugs in the neighborhood we once serviced, they have done what many though they could not- strive.

For all the above, I am proud of what I have done, though I know my job is not finished. I will continue as I did, for I must do, because I am.

To Devin: Happy B-day... Enjoy the day and your cake too.
To All The Others: Welcome To Adulthood.
