Well, the first step is to work up a good inboard profile to define how many decks you have and start figuring where everything and everyone goes. Once you get that, you can then go through deck by deck an develop the floor plans. Mind you, this will be an itnereactiive effort 'tween decks to make certain everything fits together.

Okay, I mis-understood. I thought you meant hull layout leading to deck plans for an RPG.

Well, first question is, since these are combat vessels, is there any reason for camoflage paint schemes? If not, I'd go with predominantly white schemes with suitable indetification markings. If you're in a battle, there is, of necessity, going to be plenty of incoming energy and radiation and you'd like to reflect as much of that as possible. Granted, you may well have energy shields and such, but every little bit helps, especially since gettign rid of excess heat in space is way difficult.

Does this help more?

Other than a variation in shading, there's not too much ou can do to show individual skin panels, save for where there's been a hurried repair or such. The shaidng, though, can be quite effective - consider the variety of shades achievable on a model aircraft in Natural Metal Finish (go take a look on Hyperscale or Aircraft Resources Center to find some examples).
