On a slightly off-note, and I hate to be a downer to say this, but; Bill Watterson never released his Calvin and Hobbes characters to be reproduced in any manner. (ref: The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book)

All those stickers you see on the back windows of cars and whatnot were illegally pirated images. I'm not sure if this would apply to your usage of it as a personal avatar, given that you're not using it for personal gain, but it might be worth checking into, just to be sure.
